A small, diverse city with plenty of outdoor spaces in Androscoggin County
A former mill city on the Androscoggin River, Lewiston has long been a place where immigrants moved for a fresh, hopeful start. French immigrants arrived in Lewiston from the late 1800s to mid-1900s, seeking work at its textile factories and the shoe factories in its twin city of Auburn. In the 1990s, the population diversified as Somali immigrants were drawn to the small city’s affordable housing. Today, Lewiston has about 38,000 residents, making it the second-most populous city in Maine. Lewiston has active associations dedicated to preserving history and uplifting the community, including the Maine Museum of Innovation, Learning and Labor and the Somali Bantu Community Organization. Popular restaurants and small businesses have moved into downtown Lewiston's former warehouses and factory space, embracing the exposed brick and industrial vibes. There are also plenty of outdoor spaces around Lewiston, especially west of the Androscoggin River in Auburn.

Career courses through the Lewiston Regional Technical Center
About 5,000 students are zoned to Lewiston Public Schools, which has an overall C-minus rating from Niche and is ranked as Maine's second most diverse district. The district includes the Lewiston Regional Technical Center, which offers career and technical education programs for high school students to study business, cosmetology, electricity, architectural design and more. Lewiston is also home to Bates College, a private liberal arts institution with about 1,800 undergraduates. “Students tend to stay around the college — the campus doesn’t spill out very far into the surrounding neighborhood,” says Brian DuBois, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who’s lived in the area for decades. He adds that Bates students engage with the Lewiston-Auburn area through community service and research projects.

Hiking trails, fishing spots and disc golf in Lewiston
Nature preserves and public parks are scattered throughout Lewiston. Pocket parks along the river are connected by the Androscoggin Riverside Trail, where residents go walking or jogging. Fishing spots and hand-carry boat launches are also along the water. More hiking trails run through Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, a 450-acre nature preserve that’s popular with birdwatchers. DuBois says that people often picnic on the quad at Bates College, and students hang out at the top of the rocky outcropping near campus called Mount David. Disc golfers pay to use two 18-hole courses at the Devils Grove Disc Golf. A few miles west, in Auburn, there are lakes to go fishing and boating, a golf course and a small ski area.

Cultural centers and community events downtown
Downtown Lewiston is where the city congregates for events like summer art walks and festivals. One of the most anticipated events is the hot air balloon festival, when brightly colored balloons launch from Simard-Payne Park, floating over Lewiston-Auburn. Cultural and historic institutions keep locals tapped into their city’s history. “The Franco Center is a church that they turned into a Franco-American heritage center with a museum and events since a large part of Lewiston has a French background,” DuBois says. People attend concerts and other performances at the center, as well as the Public Theatre, a small performing arts venue. Downtown also has the Maine Museum of Innovation, Learning and Labor, which has exhibits about the city’s industrial and manufacturing past.

Major interstates and public buses traverse Lewiston/Auburn
Buses operated by Lewiston/Auburn’s public transit system, Citylink, take residents throughout the twin cities. U.S. Route 202 and Interstate 95 both run through Lewiston, taking commuters out of town. Portland, the most populous city in the state, is a 35-mile drive south on Interstate 95, while Maine’s capital city of Augusta is 35 miles north on the same highway. There is a small municipal airport in the area, but the Portland International Jetport, about 38 miles south, is the nearest major airport. Many homebuyers choose Lewiston because of its range of public services. “We have two hospitals, and a lot of communities don’t even have one,” DuBois says. Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary's Regional Medical Center are major employers in the area.
