Lewistown offers the rural lifestyle with everyday convenience
From quiet moments at local fish hatcheries to strenuous hikes along rolling hills, nature shapes daily life in Lewistown. “It’s a small town with 6,000 people and four streetlights,” says Joe Irish, owner and broker of Greater Montana Land Company, who has 25 years of experience selling in Lewistown. “It’s friendly; we wave at each other, and the community is very generous when needs arise, like medical and daycare.” In the distance, the Rocky Mountains rise from the prairies, and cattle graze the meadows below. Artists come from all over to capture the striking views through photographs and plein-air paintings. Main Street anchors the vast landscape with small shops, and big-box stores are nearby, making it easy to cover day-to-day essentials without leaving town. The community is the largest in Fergus County, making it one of the most convenient areas in Central Montana.
Lewistown locals enjoy going on hikes throughout the region including on the Limekiln Trail.

Central Montana terrain serves as a natural playground
Outdoor recreation mostly centers around three activities: fishing, hunting and hiking. The area is full of wildlife, and Irish says, “In the fall, you can listen to the elk bugle.” People float on innertubes down Spring Creek nearby, and various reservoirs are known for their fishing. Irish says anglers go to “Spring Creek for excellent fly fishing and rainbow trout, East Fork Reservoir for yellow perch and northern pike and Ackley Lake for tiger muskie.” Hunters search for white-tailed deer, turkeys and antelopes on state-managed and federal parcels. When the weather permits, the Judith and Little Belt mountains are popular destinations for hiking and camping or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Inside Lewistown limits, Judith Shadows and Pine Meadows golf courses both offer public tee times, Frank Day Park has a seasonal outdoor pool, and Symmes Park features pickleball courts.

Lewistown is the primary commercial hub for Fergus County. It also has the region’s most comprehensive medical center. Long strips of old brick buildings on Main Street house local businesses. Independently run shops sell specialty goods, and Albertsons and Shipton’s Big R department store provide everyday items. Big Spring Brewing, located in a restored industrial space, shares its building with Central Feed Grilling Company, a go-to spot for burgers and steaks. El Rancho Alegre serves Mexican classics, and L-Town Pizza offers dine-in and takeout options. Harry’s Place is known for its home cooking and salad bar in an intimate diner setting.
