Aylesford Place
Diverse Lexington housing with historical charm
Walking through the calm, residential roads of Aylesford Place, residents will notice tall, leafy trees shading the sidewalk, neighbors walking down the street on their way to a local attraction and a spread of unique, historic-looking homes lining the neighborhood's grassy lawns. Although a mix of condos and apartment buildings can be found around Aylesford Place, a majority of the housing stock is made up of single-family homes that were constructed in the early 1900s. While perusing just a few, homebuyers may see colorful wooden siding, spacious front porches and rich detailing, from fluted eves and slate roofs to dormer windows. On South Ashland Avenue, residents can find large estates that range from Colonial Revivals to Queen Annes and American Foursquares, while, closer to the neighborhood's core, Dutch Colonial revivals and smaller bungalows become more common. As a rule of thumb, smaller cottage and bungalow homes can sell from about $200,000 to $370,000 dollars depending on their size and condition, while remodeled and more ornate Craftsman and classical-revival homes can sell from about $500,000 to $750,000 dollars. With an average sales price of about $430,000, homes in Aylesford Place are almost $90,000 dollars more expensive than the average for the Lexington Metro Area.Welcoming mom-and-pop shops within walking distance
An anchor of the Aylesford Place community is its diverse and welcoming selection of shopping and dining, as well as the many shop owners who run them. "It's the kind of place where when a merchant sees someone trying to park on the street but they're fishing for change and can't find any, they'll come out and put a coin in the meter," says Chartier. While groceries are just a short trip away at the Kroger on Euclid Avenue, residents can also eat out at neighborhood staples like Magee’s Baking Company, which has been open since 1956. On Saturday mornings, locals can often be found eagerly waiting in lines for steaming hot breakfast sandwiches like the Triple Threat, which includes two slices of Applewood smoked bacon, folded eggs, cheddar cheese, and a sausage patty, all on a hand-rolled croissant. For a midday treat, locals can stop by Missy's for "Some of the best pie in the world," according to Chartier, or order a warm brew from High on Art & Coffee before perusing their selection of wall art, clothing and jewelry and grabbing a seat outdoors on the patio. Another option that's considered unique for its understated beauty and pleasant ambiance is the Kentucky Native Café, a botanical oasis where picnic tables and greenery are set up under a light-filled greenhouse and patrons enjoy a rotating menu of lunch food. Residents love their local craft beers with Bavarian pretzels and beer cheese, while their locally sourced gelato and sorbet are also quite popular.Aylesford events bring the community together
While events can be found throughout the City of Lexington, Aylesford Place is also home to its own unique celebrations that bring its community together. In August, the Woodland Art Fair comes to Woodland Park with over 180 local artisans. Locals can stroll through the park, admiring carefully prepared artwork, catch up with friends, or take their kids to children's activities like face painting. Another unique event that also takes place in Woodland Park is Ballet Under the Stars, where the community brings out lawn chairs and blankets to watch as young, talented ballet dancers perform renditions of popular ballets.Heading outdoors at Woodland Park
One main feature of the Aylesford Place neighborhood is Woodland Park, which sits tight in the middle of the neighborhood and is also known as one of the oldest parks in Lexington. In addition to hosting local events, Woodland Park is a great place to play tennis with friends or take the kids out and make some fun memories at the playground. In addition to a baseball diamond and plenty of green space, Woodland is also home to a skate park where visitors can drop down the bowl, grind on ledges, do ollies or simply take it slow and learn how to balance. Another main amenity of the park is the aquatic center, which features a lap pool for adults, a pool where kids can practice flipping off the diving boards and a play pool for kids complete with climbing structures, fountains and lots of spraying water. Another popular spot for getting outdoors is the State Botanical Garden of Kentucky's arboretum. About 2 miles south of Aylesford Place, locals head to this quiet retreat to appreciate the subtle beauty of nature and 100 curated acres of walking trails, grassy lawns and horticultural gardens.Languages and the arts at Fayette county schools
Students living in Aylesford Place have the option of attending Ashland Elementary, which earns an A rating from Niche, or Maxwell Elementary, which also earns an A and is known for its Spanish immersion program. Older students attend Lexington Traditional Magnet School, which has a C-plus rating, before moving on to Lafayette High, which has an overall A rating on Niche and offers the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA). Students in SCAPA have the opportunity to hone their creative skills in a supportive environment, whether focusing on music, dance, literature or the visual arts.Getting around Aylesford Place
With plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood and a Kroger located less than a mile away on Euclid Avenue, getting around Aylesford Place is usually no problem for residents. Located just over a mile from downtown Lexington, residents can easily bike downtown or simply take the bus, which has routes running along all the neighborhood's main avenues. Plus, "Traffic is really not that bad in Lexington," says Chartier. When traveling out of state, Blue Grass Airport is about 7 miles away, just west of the city. And, in the case of a medical emergency, the University of Kentucky's Good Samaritan Hospital is practically in the neighborhood, located right off Maxwell Street.
