An artistic Lexington neighborhood
In the 1830s, horses galloped down East End's Race Street, the city's first thoroughbred racetrack. Given this, "a lot of the jockeys lived right here in the East End area because they worked on the track," says resident Jill C. Wilson, who was born in the community and has lived here ever since. However, the neighborhood is now much more known for its flourishing artistic scene. With everything from The Artists' Village to The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, East End has become one of the go-to areas in Lexington for those wanting to explore their creative sides. This rich culture and the families who have been here for generations shape the neighborhood. "People are proud to call this community their home," says longtime resident Mark Johnson, the president of ArtHouse Kentucky. "They're working on it every single day to make it better, not only for themselves but also for the generations to come."

A hub for creativity
The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center anchors the community's rich creative scene. It hosts concerts and shows, and there's even an African American Museum and Cultural Art Gallery within the center. Some people come here for events like Lyric's Winter Jazz, Blues and Soul Series and the Juneteenth Independence Day Celebration. The latter features gospel songs, African drum music and more. The neighborhood is also home to ArtHouse Kentucky. "We work with Kentucky artists and are committed to helping them develop their businesses," Johnson says, citing how they offer educational workshops and resources to help local creatives flourish. "Right down the street, we have The Artists' Village, a live-work space for artists," Johnson adds. "We built houses that have art studios attached."

East End Day and the East End Art & Music Festival
In August, the community celebrates East End Day. This annual event is "where people who have lived here for years come," says Wilson. "It's like a big family reunion." Locals can purchase matching shirts and spend the morning catching up with longtime friends, playing games and enjoying food. The East End Art & Music Festival is another annual August event. Residents of The Artists' Village open their studio doors, giving festivalgoers the opportunity to see how they make their crafts. Some people spend the afternoon perusing art, while others set out their lawn chairs to enjoy live music.
Isaac Murphey Memorial Garden, Charles Young Park and more
There are multiple green spaces here dedicated to informing people about the community's rich horse racing history, including Thoroughbred Park and the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden. The art garden was once where three-time Kentucky Derby winner Isaac Murphey lived, but today, folks can come here to check out horse-themed art made by local creatives. East End also boasts Charles Young Park, named after West Point Academy's third African American graduate. Some folks come here to shoot hoops, while others check out the Charles Young Center's offerings. It features everything from senior exercise programs to youth mentoring activities. For other options, residents are just a few miles from Woodland Park, a popular spot among baseball players and skaters alike.

Condos and single-family homes
Properties here sit tightly packed along sidewalk-lined streets. Buyers should expect to find new developments, but midcentury single-story cottages with small front porches are also particularly common here. Single-family homes typically range from $150,000 to $500,000, depending on their age, size and condition. However, most people here live in apartments or condo units. The latter typically cost between $300,000 and $500,000, with added monthly HOA fees that range between $250 to $500 per month. It's important to note that the community receives a crime score of 9 out of 10 on the CAP Index — with particularly higher-than-average property crime scores — compared to the national average of 4. This is something that East End residents are currently working on, according to Johnson. "Neighborhood associations focus on different aspects — whether it be economic development or increasing the community's safety," he says.

Manchester Coffee Company, DV8 Kitchen and more
Residents often walk to local establishments like Manchester Coffee Company, a cafe and roastery. Conveniently, DV8 Kitchen is just next door. This spot is known for more than just its fresh baked goods and breakfast offerings. "They've got a phenomenal concept," Johnson says, citing how the 501(c)3 eatery offers employment and educational resources to those in recovery programs. For nights out, East End Tap and Table boasts happy hour specials and Asian-inspired dishes, including gai yang and Thai glazed salmon. For dessert, Johnson recommends swinging by Martine's Pastries, known for its custom cakes. Conveniently, there's a nearby Kroger location for groceries. Those wanting fresh produce can check out the Lexington Farmer's Market; days and hours depend on the location.
