Refined suburban life with ample shopping on the east end of the Horse Capital

Those searching for a refined east Lexington living experience will find it in Hamburg. Home to the popular Hamburg Pavilion, a destination for retail and dining nearby, residents live in upscale suburban environs developed in the new millennium. “[There’s] not a lot happening in Hamburg aside from shopping… it does have Brighton Trail however, which is one of my favorite places to walk in all of Lexington,” says Cara C., a Lexington resident who’s lived in the city several times over more than 19 years. Jeremy Perryman, a Realtor with United Real Estate Lexington and resident in the area, adds: “It is close to the interstate, so it is very sought after. You can work outside of Lexington and commute back.”

Modern-day Colonial Revival and farmhouse styles

Contemporary reinterpretations of colonial and farmhouse styles are common among homes in Hamburg. Locals can find estates with brick exteriors, new traditional houses with cobblestone and column features, and townhomes and condos with designs inspired by 19th-century architecture. Most homes were built between the early 2000s and today. Smaller properties, such as townhomes, traditional single-family dwellings and duplex units, generally sell from $170,000 to $300,000. The area’s most lavish properties, including executive housing, custom houses and luxury townhomes, range from $395,000 to more than $1 million.

New schools and established education in Fayette County

Students in the Hamburg Area can attend schools within the Fayette County Public Schools system, including Liberty Elementary School, which has a student-teacher ratio of 15:1 and earns a B-plus score on Niche. Crawford Middle School earns a C-plus grade. The A-minus-ranked Frederick Douglass High School offers three specialized academies based around technology, professional service and health science education. Students can also participate in a variety of extracurricular programs, including more than 20 athletic programs. Mary E. Britton Middle School, a new school being built on Polo Club Boulevard to the immediate east, is set to open for classes in 2025.

Close to a key Lexington retail and dining corridor

Hamburg Pavilion is one of East Lexington's primary shopping destinations, located close to the neighborhood’s section of Interstate 75. Varied big-box stores such as Target, Costco, Barnes and Noble, Meijer and Petsmart share space in the area with specialized retailers such as Francesca’s, Kentucky Branded and Sew-a-Lot. Additional shopping options on the west end of the neighborhood include HomeGoods and Sam’s Club stores, while Walmart, Lowe’s and Hobby Lobby are available to the north. Dining options nearby include locations for well-known Lexington restaurants such as Malone’s Steakhouse and Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen. Locals searching for straightforward fare can also find a wide range of fast food and casual options nearby, including Culver’s, Smashing Tomato, Joella’s Hot Chicken and Gold Star Chili. Well-known near the University of Kentucky campus for bridging Tex-Mex with Kentucky cuisine, The Local Taco opened a Hamburg location in 2022. To the neighborhood’s east, Pasta Garage Italian Café lets residents enjoy pasta dishes from the kitchen or buy house-made lasagna, penne and gnocchi to make at home.

Beloved trails, YMCA recreation and major parks

Residents can hike, bike or walk the dogs on Brighton Trail, which stretches from Flying Ebony Drive in the neighborhood out to the Gleneagles area, 3 miles east. Liberty Park sits along the trail and offers dedicated green space and wooded areas. The Whitaker Family YMCA offers a variety of indoor recreation options, including a swimming pool, weight room, basketball court and more. Additional parks sit in nearby neighborhoods, including Idle Hour Park to the west, which features baseball and soccer fields and a community center for seniors. Pleasant Ridge Park offers a playground, dog park and picnic tables. Locals looking for a larger area for leisure can visit Jacobson Park, a 216-acre park with facilities for disc golf, boating and volleyball, along with the 18-hole golf course at the Lakeside Park Club.

Get to the good stuff with New Circle and Winchester

Hamburg residents are close to multiple major Lexington thoroughfares, including New Circle Road/KY-4 to the east, US-60/Winchester Road to the north, Interstate 75 to the east and Man-O-War Boulevard to the south. Residents are about 6 miles east of downtown Lexington and the University of Kentucky. The nearest hospital, Baptist Health Hamburg, is 3 miles east of the neighborhood’s center. Flights out of the Lexington area depart from Blue Grass Airport, 15 miles west of the neighborhood.

Movies, music and monkey business on Lex’s east side

The Regal Hamburg Pavilion theater screens new film releases in the neighborhood, and parents can take the kids to Monkey Joe’s for fun on inflatables and arcade games. Residents can also try out the immersive game experiences at Activate Lexington. To the south, Shamrock Bar & Grille offers weekly trivia nights and sports watch parties, while rotating local bands take the stage on Saturdays at O’Neill’s. 6 miles west of the neighborhood in downtown Lexington, folks can watch Kentucky Wildcats basketball games at Rupp Arena or enjoy comedy and fine arts performances at Lexington Opera House.

Important things to know

According to the First Street Foundation’s Flood Factor index, some areas within the Hamburg Area are more likely to incur higher degrees of flooding during inclement weather. Residents are advised to ensure that homes are properly elevated and insured during the home-buying process. Locals closer to traffic centers such as New Circle Road and Interstate 75 may run into higher degrees of noise pollution compared to the area’s primary population centers.
