Loradale is a welcoming community in Kentucky's horse country
Located in the city’s northeast corner, Loradale is a gateway to the Lexington region’s horse country. In contrast to most of the city, Loradale consists of rural land home to various equine operations. They include places like the Hilaur Farm, which has a show jumping facility surrounded by yards of white fencing. Amid these horse farms are a handful of mom and pop places where locals go for bologna sandwiches, tacos and locally grown produce. “It’s just very foresty and open, and I like how friendly all the people are,” says Lauren Hester, a California native and the owner of the Hilaur Farm. She also appreciates the weather. “It’s not San Diego,” she says. “It gets cold in the winter, but it’s not freezing like up north.”
There are only 81 homes in the rural Loradale neighborhood.

Ranch-style and upscale Colonial Revivals amid farmland
Barns, stables and grazing horses dot Loradale’s vast farmland. Rows of mature trees, stone walls and fences line parts of the area’s quiet two-lane country roads. “Based on my knowledge, the ability to buy a house and small acreage out there is probably pretty limited,” says Rita Jones, a farmer and Realtor with Keller Williams. “Out in that rural area, it’s predominantly larger acreage farms.”
The housing includes ranch-style homes, split-levels and some upscale Colonial Revivals, but homes do not regularly go on the market. Homes with less than 15 acres of land run from about $200,000 to $600,000. More high-end homes, or ones with lots over 20 acres, run between $1 million and $2 million. Loradale’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, or well below the national average of 4.

Sandwiches, tacos and local produce at community staples
The Jot-Em Down Store is a casual convenience store and a Loradale staple. The business carries typical goods like brand-name candy and soft drinks, and it has a small lunch area where patrons may enjoy freshly made sandwiches, chips and beer. “A lot of horse farm workers eat there,” Jones says. Easy to spot with its horse-themed mural, Loradale Market is popular for its Mexican food. The store is down the street from Pappy’s Produce, where visitors will find farm-fresh cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant and corn. An ALDI grocery store is between Interstate 64 and New Circle Road.

They may visit the barns or stop by the International Museum of the Horse, considered the most complete institution dedicated to horse history. Horse and bluegrass shows at Kentucky Horse Park
In addition to horse shows and other equestrian-themed events, the nearby Kentucky Horse Park hosts some of the Lexington area’s biggest celebrations. These include musical events like June 2025’s Spirit in the Bluegrass Music Fest, one of the annual gatherings serving as spiritual successors to the old Festival of the Bluegrass. Many come to the park to listen to acts showcasing the distinct string-driven music.
Russell Cave Road commute to downtown Lexington
The Russell Cave Road thoroughfare runs through Loradale and goes toward downtown Lexington, about 13 miles south. However, the community is a few miles closer to Paris in neighboring Bourbon County. The community is also 12 miles from Interstate 64, which takes travelers to other cities like Frankfort, the state capital. Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport is the region’s hub for commercial flights. “The Blue Grass Airport is probably one of my favorite airports to fly into because you fly over all the horse farms,” Hester says. “It’s unreal to think all these horses are being raised here.” Paris’ Bourbon Community Hospital and the Albert B. Chandler Hospital near the University of Kentucky are the closest major medical facilities.
