Charming and historic Lexington neighborhood close to downtown
While not the largest neighborhood in Lexington, there’s a strong chance those passing through this part of the city will spot it. Some limestone columns occupy both ends of Mentelle Park, with the pair of installations effectively marking the entrances to one of the city’s historic neighborhoods. Mentelle Park is engraved into a couple of the more than 100-year-old fixtures located right along the intersection with Richmond Road. “It’s a lovely way to mark the entrance to the park,” says Zach Davis, president of Kirkpatrick & Co., a native of the bordering Ashland Park neighborhood and a Lexington history buff. Located between the columns are four narrow and grassy medians with trees that split the Mentelle Park street lanes. Lining the road are numerous brick homes built prior to World War II. Some of the homes show features like limestone siding mixed with the predominant brick exterior and wide covered porches with classical style columns and balconies. Similar to some of its neighbors, the combination of the natural scenery and historic traits has made up a significant part of Mentelle’s appeal over the decades. “Mentelle Park is right across the street from Ashland Park, and it has the same interesting, very attractive and stately homes,” says Meredith Walker, an agent with Bluegrass Sotheby’s International, who’s made several sales in Mentelle. “It also has a boulevard down the middle of it, which basically gives it a park-like setting.” The neighborhood got its name from a prominent French family. Charlotte Victoire LeClerc Mentelle, better known as Madame Mentelle, opened her School for Young Ladies in Lexington in 1820, teaching a curriculum that included courses in French, literature and dancing. The school’s perhaps most famous pupil was future First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Located about 2 miles east of the downtown, Mentelle is also considered to be conveniently located to much of the Horse Capital’s prominent institutions and entertainment. “Another thing that’s attractive is its proximity to downtown,” Walker says.

Eclectic mix of dining on Warehouse Block
The heart of the neighborhood is located just a few streets over to Warehouse Block on National Avenue, which has over the years been redeveloped from mostly industrial to mixed use. That work has led to an eclectic mix of shops populating the roadway. Visitors to this area can stop by an industrial style strip mall to grab orders of macarons at La Petite Delicat. They can then easily go across the road toward some more repurposed buildings, pass by some barrels and enter Mirror Twin Brewing’s beer garden. Other nearby options include donuts at Spalding’s Bakery, crafted cocktails and the “World Famous” tacos at El Cid’s or scratch-kitchen meals in an elegantly renovated space at Epping’s on Eastside. Those not necessarily interesting in dining can browse for antiques at The Domestic, try an escape room at Breakout Games – Lexington, sign up for classes at Wildfire Yoga or go look at some of the colorful glass sculptures at Trifecta: Glass – Art – Lounge. Located less than a mile outside the neighborhood, Kroger offers an option for grocery shopping.

Multitude of amenities at Woodland Park
Although it’s not quite within the neighborhood, Woodland Park is but a few blocks over. One of Lexington’s oldest parks, the 19-acre site offers a multitude of amenities that include tennis and basketball courts, a ball field, an aquatic center and a skate park. The park also hosts the annual Woodland Art Fair, a free event often featuring well over 150 artists and artisans. A few more blocks north is Thoroughbred Park, which honors the city’s horse culture. Seven bronze and life-size sculptures of jockeys on racehorses welcome those entering the roughly 2-acre park from the Midland Avenue and Main Street side. The sculptures stand in front of an expansive stone wall and fountain.
