Lexington’s art and cultural destination
The North Limestone district — or “NoLi” — was once a historically Black community that produced one of the Kentucky Derby’s youngest winning jockeys. While the neighborhood declined during the second half of the 20th century, the new millennium has seen the community reborn as a center of art and progressivism. Trendy boutiques, restaurants and bars occupy the vintage brick buildings on the North Limestone thoroughfare. Strolls through the neighborhood lead to nature- and farm-themed murals, rainbow-colored crosswalks and pride flags hanging from a few balconies. Other notable sites include the Greyline, an old Greyhound bus station now home to businesses like a vintage clothing store and a craft distillery recently relocated from California’s Bay Area. “There’s a lot of cute little shops and things that are trying to make a splash in that community,” says Ryan Camenisch, a Realtor with the Brokerage. “It’s kind of a ‘by the people, for the people,’ type of neighborhood. It doesn’t have some of the corporate money bigger neighborhoods in Lexington have. It’s got a little more homemade feel to it.”

From Victorian-era cottages and bungalows to 21st-century contemporaries
North Limestone’s residential blocks mainly consist of homes built during the first half of the 20th century. Wood and chain-link fences are standard, while some properties boast colorful murals. The neighborhood features Craftsman bungalows, Victorian-era cottages and a few buildings with Italianate designs. Many bungalows sit just a few feet apart and incorporate shotgun influences with their long, narrow builds. The neighborhood also has a growing number of newer homes, including two-story contemporary houses with slanted skillion roofs and modern bungalow designs. North Limestone's homes mostly go from about $150,000 to $210,000, but newer and larger builds run between $30,000 and $400,000. Many small investment properties sell for between $50,000 and $100,000.

Coffee, donuts and craft whiskeys at the Greyline
The Greyline Station’s occupants include North Lime Coffee & Donuts, while other cafes in North Limestone include the art-themed Third Street Stuff & Coffee, which sells a variety of hand-painted items. The cafe boasts a colorful exterior covered with inspirational and humorous messages. Those looking for a to-go meal for lunch can stop by Wing KYng. Or for a brunch spot with Southern flair, Minton’s choices range from the banana- and sauce-topped Elvis Pancakes to the Little Brother, a hoagie bun packed with smoked sausage and macaroni and cheese. Bespoken Spirits, a tech company at heart, uses a distinct scientific process to make its craft whiskeys. A group of investors, including actors Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, designed the distillery’s whiskey brands. “They picked every single detail of the bottle. The proof, the age…they single-handedly customized their own bottle,” says Jared Bickel, Bespoken’s director of customer relations. ALDI is one of the nearest grocery stores.

From indoor rock climbing to summer fun at Castlewood Park
Located in the neighboring community of the same name, the 32-acre Castlewood Park is one of the largest city green spaces within New Circle Road. In addition to playgrounds, the park offers amenities for basketball, tennis and baseball players. It also houses the Castlewood Aquatic Center and Sprayground, one of Lexington’s six aquatic centers. However, the park’s most prominent attraction is the historic Loudoun House, a rare Gothic Revival villa that now draws local art enthusiasts to its gallery and exhibits. Other neighborhood green spaces include Duncan and Gratz parks. Gratz offers relaxing walks on its red brick path, which passes by decorative streetlights and a sculpture in the middle of a fountain. The park becomes quite picturesque during the fall when the leaves from its trees blanket the ground. Those interested in trying indoor rock climbing can check out LEF Climbing.
