Wellington
Wellington Park and Shillito Park provide nearby outdoor recreation
The neighborhood has two nearby parks and indoor recreational opportunities as well. For a peaceful, reflective walk and a large space for dogs to play, Wellington Park’s 38-acre space is ideal. It offers a sensory garden and a mindfulness maze for community members. Pups can meet up for socialization and exercise in the 6-acre section devoted to them. Behind the Fayette Mall is Shillito Park, which offers 176 acres of public facilities. There is a disc golf course, as well as a variety of sports fields. It also holds a castle-like playground filled with inclusive play elements. Nearby Champs Entertainment Complex has plenty of activities, including laser tag and mini golf. There is also a cinema in the mall. Within about a 5-mile drive from the neighborhood, locals can access landmark sights, such as the Keeneland Racetrack and the Arboretum State Botanical Garden of Kentucky.North Lime Coffee & Donuts is a popular spot
In addition to recreation, locals can also find restaurants and shopping within walking distance, and downtown Lexington has even more to choose from. On Nicholasville Road, Bella Notte serves family-style Italian favorites accompanied by fresh-baked bread and olive oil. Other dining options include Roosters, a casual stop for wings, and Thai Street Food Kitchen. “North Lime Coffee & Donuts is a large attraction,” Hancock says. “Everybody walks there Saturday mornings, and there’s a line backed out the door, with people waiting for their donuts.” For groceries, Wellington residents can choose from Meijer, Whole Foods, ALDI or Kroger. The nearby Fayette Mall, which is the largest mall in Kentucky, allows locals to take care of all their shopping needs without having to drive through traffic. For an evening out, the Lexington Distillery District and The Burl, a popular music venue, are both around 5 miles away.Housing in Wellington is made up of newer homes than Monticello and Stone Creek
The neighborhood is divided into a few smaller subdivisions. The Wellington subdivision mostly has single-family homes and townhouses built after 2000. These tend to sell for between $300,000 to the mid-$500,000s and may have additional association fees between $17 and $350 per month. In Robinwood, Monticello and Stone Creek, residences from the 1970s through the 1990s are more prevalent. It’s common to see brick ranch-style homes, split-levels and bi-levels on quarter-acre grassy plots. These might start just below $300,000 for a three-bedroom house but newly renovated options with three bathrooms can fetch prices in the upper $400,000s. Some parts of the community lie within flood zones, and homeowners in these areas may be required to purchase flood insurance. Traffic along the beltway and Route 27 may result in high noise levels, particularly during typical rush hours.Walk to Wellington Elementary or Lexington Christian Academy
Families can find Wellington Elementary School, which rates an A on Niche, located in the heart of the community. Crosswalks and sidewalks allow parents to walk their children to school if they choose. Students can then transition to A-minus-rated Jessie M. Clark Middle School. They may finish their secondary education at Lafayette High School, which gets an A grade. Lafayette offers two application-based magnet programs — SCAPA (School for the Creative and Performing Arts), designed to help young people hone their creative skills, and a pre-engineering program, open to those who show an aptitude for science. In addition to highly rated public schools, parents may opt to send their children to Lexington Christian Academy, an A-rated coeducational private school that teaches prekindergarten through 12th grade students. The Blue Grass Stakes and concerts at The Burl are within a short drive
With proximity to both Keeneland Racetrack and downtown Lexington, locals can easily find events to attend. There are performances at Rupp Arena and The Burl throughout the year, and the annual Blue Grass Stakes, a qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby, takes place in the spring each year.Getting to and from Wellington
Many residents depend on their cars for travel. Kentucky Route 4, or New Circle Road, as it’s known locally, borders the neighborhood, allowing for easy travel around the city. U.S. Route 27 also runs past the area, and it is a direct artery for getting downtown or heading out of the city. As Hancock notes, though, “Clay’s Mill Road is a back road that gives easy access to downtown without having to get on a larger main road. It also has a bike lane.” Lextran buses stop at the mall and along U.S. Route 27 for those who prefer to use public transportation. About 5 miles from the neighborhood is the Blue Grass Airport, which offers direct flights to more than 15 domestic destinations. The nearest emergency facility is the University of Kentucky HealthCare hospital, just over 4 miles from Wellington.
