A growing North Carolina community with a small-town feel

Situated just over 20 miles southeast of Greensboro, Liberty, North Carolina, maintains a charming small-town vibe amidst its recent revitalization and growth, reflected in an eclectic array of local businesses in its vibrant downtown and new construction sprouting along its rural outskirts. “We consider it a Mayberry town,” says Realtor Sandy Stewart of eXp Realty, referring to the idyllic setting of The Andy Griffith Show. “Liberty is a cute small town with a very old-school downtown, and many people know each other, but new people are always coming in.” The town’s growth has been spurred in part by a Toyota battery manufacturing plant opening 6 miles north. “We’re seeing a lot of growth in and around Liberty,” Stewart says. “Not only with the Toyota plant bringing a lot of high-tech jobs, but the older buildings downtown from the ‘20s to the ‘40s are being redone. Downtown is trying to come back; small businesses like vintage stores are popping up and the old movie theater has been converted.” She adds that the surge in commercial growth is driving residential growth, and the town is slowly starting to see the fruits of its labor. “It’s a thriving little town,” Stewart says.

Vibrant stores and restaurants add character to Downtown Liberty

A cluster of shops and eateries comprises Liberty’s downtown at the walkable intersection of South Fayetteville Street and East Swannanoa Avenue. Locals can fuel up on a specialty coffee at Liberty Grounds or opt for a cup of tea at Spark Cup of Joy tea shop before tucking into a breakfast at Y’all Come Back Café. Hurricane Jane’s is another community stalwart, serving American diner favorites in a coastal-inspired dive. Antique stores like The Liberty Market Place and Shadow Box stock their shelves with unique collectibles. Locals pass the historic Liberty Train Station further down West Swannanoa Avenue to reach the stores at the Liberty Plaza shopping mall, which houses a Food Lion and CVS Pharmacy. On the other side of town, Art’s Town & Country provides local goods and pantry items.

Traditional home styles and new construction along Liberty's outskirts

Liberty’s blended urban and rural landscape offers a mix of housing stock and styles. Ranch-style homes, bungalows and farmhouse-inspired houses cluster in Liberty’s center, and new construction spreads out on larger properties as the town blends into its bucolic outskirts. “As you get closer to Downtown, the more urban it is, but it still feels like a small town,” Stewart says. “People who don’t want to be in the city usually come to the Liberty area for that reason; you can have that rural feel while still having access to big-box stores 30 minutes away.” Properties on the town’s fringes can reach up to a couple of acres, and parcels of land are also for sale. “You can still get a home on a large tract of land,” Stewart says. “Homes are on septic systems and wells, so you have to be on at least three-fourths of an acre.” Single-family homes typically list between $170,000 and $480,000, with new construction starting around $300,000 and outliers on 20-plus acres fetching $1 million.

Nearby highways grant access to Greensboro and beyond

Access to major thoroughfares and easy commutes to the neighboring metro areas are also a draw for homebuyers. “Liberty is pretty well-situated,” Stewart says. “You’re not far from U.S. Highway 421 and State Highway 49, which runs right through the town, and those are two main highways.” Greensboro is about 21 miles away, Durham is 50 miles and Raleigh is about 60 miles away. The Piedmont Triad International Airport is the closest airport, located 35 miles away in Greensboro.

Liberty Antiques Festival and events at The Liberty Showcase

Twice a year, in April and September, over 400 dealers hailing from 25 states swarm the Pike Family Farm on the town’s outskirts for the Liberty Antiques Festival. Thousands of festival-goers weave in and out of the white tents dotting the expansive open tract, rifling through collectibles, memorabilia, jewelry and more. The Liberty Showcase Theater hosts additional events, such as performances and a variety of musical guests. “We call it our version of the Grand Ole Opry,” Stewart says.
