Rural living on the banks of the Trinity River

Open land, miles of forest and a flowing river create a spacious country lifestyle that gives meaning to Liberty’s name. This rural place of around 9,000 people ties nature and community together, with stomping grounds for parades, antiquing and comfort food. "There is a different genre of folk [in Liberty] that are there raising young kids who want a grassroots upbringing for their children," says Realtor Terri Beight, who works for Premier Property Group. Liberty Independent School District, local hospitals, warehouses and manufacturing companies are major employers in the area.

Liberty Municipal Golf Course has a 9-hole fairway and a catch-and-release fishing pond. Liberty's protected land is inhabited by the occasional bear and hundreds of bird species. Cotton candy cuties at the Trinity Valley Exposition Baby Parade

Liberty Jubilee is a signature event held downtown in March since 1986. It brings the community together for a barbecue cookoff, the Liberty Municipal Library's book and bake sale, live entertainment from a main stage, and rides for the kids.

The Trinity Valley Exposition Baby Parade, held in the fall, began in 1914 at the Liberty County Fair. In 2024, Liberty's littlest were decked out in circus costumes for "The Greatest Show on Earth." Participants in the "riding division" floated by in decorated prams and cabooses, dressed up as cotton candy, lions and magicians.

A little shopping and history in downtown Liberty

Liberty is the third-oldest city in Texas and has historic landmarks to match. The downtown area's banks, family-owned restaurants, antique stores and other local businesses circle its old courthouse, which houses the first exact replica of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
"Downtown is full, and it's a hybrid. Some businesses move in and out, but it stays pretty consistent," Beight says. Jax Hamburgers is a feature that's been around for over 20 years. Liberty Farmers Market happens downtown four days a week. Downtown Houston and Beaumont are within 45 miles for major shopping.

Generous lot sizes in Liberty

Ranch and traditional-style homes spread out across Liberty. Lots are generous, even in more compact subdivisions. “[The largest lots are] probably 1-to-2-acre tracts depending on which community you’re looking into. And of course, there’s farmland so there’s 100-acre tracts,” Beight says. The city’s median home price is around $230,000, significantly less than the state’s median.

Ranch-style homes are scattered throughout Liberty, offering ample lots even within suburbs.

Plans to widen U.S. Route 90 through Liberty

U.S. Route 90, a major east-west highway, flows through Liberty. In late 2024, the Texas Department of Transportation unveiled plans to widen the 11-mile roadway to meet increasing traffic demands. Brazos Transit offers fixed-route and paratransit bus services in Liberty. The small, 25-bed Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center serves the community. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is roughly 30 miles west.

Liberty's mostly fair weather days

Liberty's hot for around four months, and cool for less than three. “We're not out snow plowing in Texas by any means. Hurricanes periodically [affect the area] but they typically do not go that far north. You may get the outer bands of it," Beight says. The Trinity River and homes closest to it have flooded in recent years.
