Named after Fort Ligonier, a British Fort from the French and Indian War, historical Ligonier Borough has blossomed into a walkable small town with a main street business district. “Ligonier is very quaint. It's safe and quiet, a great place to raise kids or retire. Everyone knows each other for the most part,” says Misty Hegan, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. The close-knit community celebrates seasonal events in the epicenter of town, surrounded by a vibrant local restaurant scene.
On Loyalhanna Creek, Ligonier is composed of walkable tree-lined streets of single-family homes around the thoroughfare of Main Street. Houses often have detached garages and smaller yards decorated with shrubs and garden beds. Buyers can choose from vinyl Colonial Revivals, brick American Foursquares, Victorians with scalloped siding details and Folk Victorians featuring intricate woodwork on wraparound porches. Sales prices can range from $170,000 for Colonial Revivals to $380,000 for move-in ready Victorians.
Students in the borough attend the Ligonier Valley School District. According to Niche, the district receives B+ ratings in academics and college prep. With approximately 1,408 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15-to-1, students can benefit from focused attention in the classroom. Schools include RK Mellon Elementary School, Ligonier Valley Middle School and Ligonier Valley High School.
To spend quality time outdoors, head to a few of Ligonier’s parks. As a centerpiece of the community, The Diamond resembles a picturesque town square out of a Hallmark movie, especially during Christmas time. The park and gazebo were even featured in “Love the Coopers,” a 2015 holiday film. At Friendship Park, bring children to a large playground area and picnic pavilion. The park also has ballfields, tennis courts and basketball courts for athletes. Mellon Park offers a peaceful respite with benches shaded by trees along a short walking path.
The Ligonier community gathers for many seasonal festivities. "We have great events in the Diamond area in the middle of town,” Hegan says. In the summertime, watch live music performances during the Sunday Evening Band concerts. Fort Ligonier Days honors the Battle of Fort Ligonier with three days of activities like a parade, a 5K race and over 200 vendors. For the autumn season, head to the Pumpkin & Spice Festival, which has pumpkin-flavored food and fall activities. At Light Up Ligonier, get in the holiday spirit with the town Christmas lighting, a visit with Santa and a sleigh ride.
"We have a number of great restaurants in town. All eating places have outdoor seating,” Hegan says. Carol & Dave's Roadhouse, an American restaurant, has a charming, old-fashioned atmosphere ideal for family dinners. At First Wok, order classic Chinese dishes during lunch dates in an interior with booth seating and plenty of greenery. Rosalie Jioio's Little Italy serves Italian comfort food in a cozy atmosphere to make people feel right at home.
To learn more about the history of the area, visit Fort Ligonier. The historical site has guided tours about the events of the French and Indian War. The reconstructed fort organizes reenactments, plus artifacts and exhibits in the museum.
About 51 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Ligonier is part of the Greater Pittsburgh region. During trips to the big city, visit Point State Park for scenic river strolls and PPG Paints Arena for a Penguins game. "I was born and raised here. In Ligonier, every day feels like the weekend,” Hegan says. In Ligonier Borough, enjoy a slower-paced lifestyle in a walkable small town that brims with festive events in the park and bustling local restaurants.

Golfing in spring, swimming in summer, hiking in fall and skiing in winter — outdoor recreation never stops in western Pennsylvania's Ligonier Township. "There's so much to do here, and every day feels like the weekend," says Misty Hegan, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, who grew up in the township. Despite its rural landscape, Ligonier's small-town charm, country club amenities and serene state parks keep neighbors busy and connected throughout the year. When finding a home here, you'll have plenty of options across the township's 92 square miles. If you're looking for land, spacious country homes with acreage provide privacy and room for farming operations. Two-story Craftsman-inspired homes with covered front porches sit far from the main road, and a thick border of pines and oaks keeps the neighbors out of view. Some residential streets in compact boroughs like Laughlintown may include sidewalks, but don't expect much more than a gravel drive in the more secluded areas. For most three-bedroom, single-family homes, buyers can expect prices in the $150,000 to $350,000 range, but larger options are also available. "Our tax rates are low compared to the surrounding area, so people often come here to build," Hegan says. You might come across a million-dollar estate on 20 acres or a custom chateau with seven bedrooms and a private pond. Regardless of the price, you'll be surrounded by outdoor recreation options that will keep you active all year. In spring, break out your clubs and book a tee time at one of the nearby golf courses — keep in mind that you might need a membership to enjoy everything these clubs offer. Ligonier Country Club, Laurel Valley Golf Club and Rolling Rock Club are all renowned for their private golfing experience, and Champion Lakes Golf Course & Resort is popular for its public course and cozy lodging. As the summer heat rolls in, snag tickets to Idlewild & SoakZone, a premier water and amusement park only 3 miles from the center of town. Fall is the best time to hike in Linn Run State Park, a 600-acre expanse that borders Forbes State Forest and includes camping areas, waterfalls and a well-stocked trout stream. And after the first big snow, head to Laurel Mountain State Park for some downhill skiing. Hegan also highlights the community's local events, which range from outdoor concerts to holiday light shows. Fort Ligonier Days bring the township together to celebrate with a parade and local vendors, and neighbors often gather at The Diamond, Ligonier borough's informal town square. Right down the street, you can sign up for group fitness classes at the Ligonier Valley YMCA or take the kids for a playdate at Friendship Park, which features a vibrant playscape and a picnic shelter. And on Saturdays, stop by the Ligonier Country Market to pick up fresh produce from nearby farmers. During the week, students in Ligonier can attend Mellon Elementary School, Ligonier Valley Middle School and Ligonier Valley High School, which all maintain grades of C-plus or better on Niche. In high school, the senior internship program connects students with local organizations and businesses, such as the Fort Ligonier Historical Site and Museum. Students interested in health care will find internship opportunities at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, just 15 miles away. Ligonier Township may be rural, but that doesn't mean it lacks dining options. "One of Ligonier's best-kept secrets is The Gray Goose. It has beautiful views of a huge pond, and you can see the swans from the bar," Hegan says. This upscale American eatery sits just off Lincoln Highway, about 2 miles from the Giant Eagle Supermarket. Local buses also run along this main artery, but a car will make the 50-mile trip from downtown Pittsburgh go by much faster, leaving you more time to explore the recreation options in Ligonier Township.
