People raise kids and retire in Ligonier Township

Named after Fort Ligonier, a British Fort from the French and Indian War, historical Ligonier Borough has blossomed into a walkable small town with a main street business district. “Ligonier is very quaint. It's safe and quiet, a great place to raise kids or retire. Everyone knows each other for the most part,” says Misty Hegan, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. The close-knit community celebrates seasonal events in the epicenter of town, surrounded by a vibrant local restaurant scene.

To learn more about the history of the area, visit Fort Ligonier. The historical site has guided tours about the events of the French and Indian War. The reconstructed fort organizes reenactments, plus artifacts and exhibits in the museum.

The Diamond is a community gathering space

To spend quality time outdoors, head to a few of Ligonier’s parks. As a centerpiece of the community, The Diamond resembles a picturesque town square out of a Hallmark movie, especially during Christmas time. The park and gazebo were even featured in “Love the Coopers,” a 2015 holiday film. At Friendship Park, bring children to a large playground area and picnic pavilion. The park also has ballfields, tennis courts and basketball courts for athletes. Mellon Park offers a peaceful respite with benches shaded by trees along a short walking path.

A 5K race and fall festival bring the community together

The Ligonier community gathers for many seasonal festivities. "We have great events in the Diamond area in the middle of town,” Hegan says. In the summertime, watch live music performances during the Sunday Evening Band concerts. Fort Ligonier Days honors the Battle of Fort Ligonier with three days of activities like a parade, a 5K race and over 200 vendors. For the autumn season, head to the Pumpkin & Spice Festival, which has pumpkin-flavored food and fall activities. At Light Up Ligonier, get in the holiday spirit with the town Christmas lighting, a visit with Santa and a sleigh ride.

Ligonier is part of the Pittsburgh metro area

In Ligonier, every day feels like the weekend,” Hegan says. In Ligonier Borough, enjoy a slower-paced lifestyle in a walkable small town that brims with festive events in the park and bustling local restaurants.
