A bustling township with a rural feel

Nestled along the Schuylkill River, Limerick Township offers a relaxed atmosphere with a small-town feel. The southwestern half of the community is home to small villages, subdivisions and busy streets. To the northeast, the landscape is more rural, with winding roads leading past farm fields and woodlands. “Limerick was first settled in 1699. It was very much a rural farm community with a population of about 7,000 until the 1980s,” says Martin Witte of the Limerick Township Historical Society. “That was when the four-lane U.S. 422 and the Limerick Generating Station nuclear facility were built. Today, Limerick has a population of over 20,000.” Witte says the nuclear facility, located on the Schuylkill River, may be the area's biggest employer. (A May 2024 impact study by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission found the site had no significant environmental impact on the area.) Overall, Limerick Township is a quiet suburban neighborhood where neighbors look out for each other. “Everyone here stays connected to one another, so there are eyes everywhere. And our police officers are very active in the community,” says Kelli Musser, a Realtor with Compass RE who grew up in the area. That involvement may contribute to Limerick Township’s notably low CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

A variety of homes and prices

While homes in nearby Royersford sit close together along busy streets, Limerick Township is much more suburban, says Musser. Here, prospective home buyers will find newer colonial and upscale townhouses. Older homes built during the second half of the 20th century include Cape Cod, ranch-style and split-level homes. Most houses in Limerick Township have larger yards and plenty of surrounding trees. Most homes in newer subdivisions tend have well-tended lawns and sit back from tree- and sidewalk-lined residential streets. Musser says home buyers should expect to pay between $350,000 to $750,000 for a home in the community. Several senior communities in the area include manufactured homes between $165,000 and $210,000.

From outlet malls to tomato pies, Limerick supplies

Steps outside of Limerick Township, Main Street runs through the heart of Royersford. A variety of small businesses located in old buildings line the streets. A walk down the street takes shoppers past the treasures at Open Door Thrift Store and the fashionable outfits found in Cranberry Street Boutique. Along the Limerick Township border, shoppers can pick up essentials at Target and Giant on East Ridge Pike. Or spend the day at The Philadelphia Premium Outlets, just off U.S. 422 in Limerick. Hungry shoppers and other diners can grab lunch or dinner at Copperfield Inn at Lakeside. The restaurant has indoor and patio seating and specializes in chef-inspired twists on American cuisine. For a casual experience, grab a slice of pizza and other Italian eats from Giovanni's, or head to Downtown Gastropub & Restaurant to hang out, drink some beer and enjoy a burger and giant pretzel. Musser says Corropolese Italian Bakery and Deli makes a tomato pie that is a local must-have at family and community get-togethers.
