Generational residents in the Nippenose Valley

Located in the Nippenose Valley, Limestone is a rural Lycoming County township primarily composed of farmland overlooking the Appalachian Mountains. "Limestone is predominantly Amish, and they own quite a few farms in the valley," says Jeanne Engel, secretary of Limestone Township and a resident for 70 years. New people don't move to Limestone often, but those who do will find a quiet community where almost everyone knows one another. "There are about four or five different families that have dominated this valley for hundreds of years, so when we came in, we were outsiders," says Don Kline, owner of Valley Galley & Gifts, who moved to Limestone in 1998. "It took a few years, but now we're part of the clan. It's really a community spirit."

Farmstands and Valley Gallery & Gifts among the only businesses

Limestone has a volunteer fire department, a Dollar General, several fruit stands and four churches: St. James Lutheran Church, Oriole United Methodist Church, Nippenose Bible Fellowship and Oval Church. Restaurants like The Shore Diner and a Weis grocery store can be found 7 miles away in Jersey Shore Township, but local farmstands and greenhouses, including A.P. Lorson Fruit Farm, 654 Farm Market and Dewalt Greenhouse supply residents with a steady harvest. "A lot of the fruit stands and greenhouses are Amish,” Engel says. Valley Gallery & Gifts is one of the few businesses in Limestone, with owner Don Kline gradually gaining support for his gallery since opening in 2002. "The first year or two was slow, but by then, the community here accepted it,” says Kline, who still sells and displays photography and paintings by Pennsylvania artists. "I have almost every known artist in Central Pennsylvania,” Kline says. “But I promote almost any artist that walks through the door.”

Socializing at craft fairs and tractors pulls

There are no major community-wide festivals in Limestone, where locals tend to socialize at smaller occasions like church fundraisers, craft fairs or the Lion's Club tractor parade in the spring. Kline also holds some of the larger gatherings in Limestone at his gallery, bringing the community together to promote local artists. His annual event in October draws over 1,000 people to see artists like David Seybold, who became popular after painting a picture in 2001 called "The Housekeeper," featuring a snowman with a pot on its head in front of an old farmhouse. "We made 500 prints, and it sold out in 45 days," Kline says. “People were fighting over the last ones.” Now, Seybold releases a new snowman painting each year.

Three villages have groupings of homes

Although most of the land in Limestone is dedicated to farming, the township's three villages — Oval, Oriole and Collomsville — have small enclaves of homes. Driving from the open expanses of land into the villages reveals houses on about a half-acre of land, within view of one another. Properties in the villages are mostly traditional and Colonial Revival houses built in the early 1900s or ranch-style homes built later in the 20th century. They usually cost between $150,000 and $300,000. Nippenose Valley Village is a senior living community in Limestone off Pennsylvania Route 44.
