With its tall trees, old farmhouses and 19th century railroad tracks lining the shore of the Monongahela River, Lincoln is a scenic borough with some of the best forests in the surrounding area. This is a rustic, residential neighborhood where people retreat down dirt streets and hilly roads to their multiple-acre properties and hide out for as long as they please. It’s where neighbors walk through the woods, where they drink Yuengling and eat kettle chips inside a little brick shack, where they hike next to a babbling brook and walk up and down a witchy staircase. It’s a woodsy paradise. “It’s acreage, farmland and nice residential lots,” says Dan Haeck, team manager of the Dan Haeck Team with Coldwell Banker Realty. Most of the houses in Lincoln have several acres of land and come in a variety of styles. There are mid-19th century barn-style houses on 12 acres, 1960s brick ranch-style homes and two-story shingle houses on one acre of land or less, and large, 4,200-square-foot colonials built in 2019. Prices can range from $125,000 to $250,000 for smaller homes and less acreage to $525,000 to $675,000 for more space. Kids in Lincoln go to school through the South Allegheny School District, a public school system with a total of three schools. South Allegheny Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth grade and scores a C-minus from Niche. South Allegheny Middle School serves sixth, seventh and eighth grades and also rates a C-minus. South Allegheny High School teaches grades 9-12, and earns a B-minus. The school district has several dozen clubs and organizations open to students, including a poetry club, a jazz band, a book club, a hospitality academy and a science society. Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, a 450-acre greenspace and trail system with thick woods and tons of wildflowers. The Hollow sits on the site of a former quarry and then pipe factory that was acquired by the Allegheny Land Trust in 1994 to protect it from landfill development. The factory structure has been engulfed by nature over the years, giving it an eerie, almost ethereal look. Its creepiness has made it a legendary spot to visit. At the LochMon Tavern, neighbors munch on mozzarella sticks and chicken wings while sitting on the patio. They order burgers and drink Yuengling on tap. Across town, they eat pizza and spaghetti at Carriage Inn Restaurant & Catering. Residents shop for groceries at the Giant Eagle Supermarket on Lincoln's south edge, while big-box stores like Target and Walmart can be found 9 miles away at Century III Plaza. Lincoln is located close to Routes 148 and 51. The city of Pittsburgh is about 16 miles away to the northwest.
