Everett is a well-established enclave near the heart of the city

Everett is where a wealth of classic architecture sits in the shadow of one of Lincoln's signature landmarks. The neighborhood is just minutes from downtown and the Nebraska State Capitol, with its trademark 400-foot tower. Multiple restaurants are within walking distance, and a central elementary school is nearby for families with young children. The area combines turn-of-the-century character with convenience for modern-day living.

Classic homes and varied prices shape the Everett market

Early 1900s houses set the tone in this neighborhood. The gridded blocks here are full of vintage American Foursquares, Craftsman homes and National-style options. Some need work, while others have already been updated, so single-family properties can go for prices anywhere from $90,000 to the upper $200,000s. Many houses here serve as rentals, creating an area where well over 80% of residents are renters. Multifamily properties range from the lower $200,000s to the lower $500,000s.

The diversity of options in Everett welcomes a wide range of people, and its location within sight of the distinct Capitol tower adds more than just visual appeal.
“You can see [the tower] easily driving around the neighborhood, so it makes sense that we have a lot of lawyers, politicians and government employees who live here,” says Matt Kirkland, who owns The Matt Kirkland Group and Giving Realty, and has 20 years of real estate experience. “At the same time, we also have a broad mix of urbanites, from young professionals and families with kids to single people of all ages who love living in historic houses.”

Restaurants and retail are easily accessible

The Everett area has its own dining scene, meaning you don’t necessarily have to venture to Downtown Lincoln for a bite to eat. One of the most well-known options is Billy’s Restaurant, which local Realtor Maxwell Sandquist says is a long-time local favorite. The spot is within a former home that dates to 1887. “They just do everything really well, and have some classic American dishes,” says Sandquist, who’s with Nebraska Realty and has almost 10 years of real estate experience. “They have a great steak.” Other eateries close to Everett’s homes include:

  • El Chaparro, a Mexican restaurant known for its carne asada
  • Cultiva, a café that offers crepes to go along with your coffee
  • DaVinci’s, which is part of a Lincoln chain serving up Italian classics and Philly cheesesteaks
  • Neveria La Monarca, which has a drive-through and a variety of ice cream treats
There’s a Russ’s Market location about a mile away for groceries and other household needs. Downtown’s Historic Haymarket District, also roughly a mile from Everett, offers eclectic shopping with multiple antique stores, bookstores and boutiques.

Indoor and outdoor activities are available in and around Everett

Lincoln’s F Street Community Center provides a place for indoor recreation within the neighborhood, with a gymnasium, a weight room and a track. The facility hosts a variety of activities and programs for a variety of ages, including:

  • Free weekday dinners for those aged 2 to 18
  • The Extreme Teens Day camp, held in the summer for those in grades 6 through 8
  • Adult group fitness classes, including yoga
You can also get active at nearby Cooper Park, which has tennis and horseshoe courts, outdoor fitness equipment, a playground, and a ball field. A trip to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo is another way to spend a nice day. The zoo is less than 2 miles away and is home to more than 400 animals. “Families with kids get a kick out of living close to the zoo,” Kirkland says. “What can be better than growing up near a zoo?”

Students get close access to LPS schools and the Nebraska campus

The city’s Lincoln Public Schools system is highly rated. Much of the Everett area is zoned for Everett Elementary School, which is within a short walk for many students and their families, and offers an after-school program. LPS also offers school choice through its open enrollment process and specialized focus programs. Older students in the neighborhood are just about a mile from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus, the core of the state’s largest school, with about 24,000 students.

Residents can walk, bike or ride the bus to get around the city

Everett’s location and layout means you don’t necessarily need a car to get where you need to go. Sidewalks on every block make the area walkable. Streets like 11th and 13th offer bike lanes for those commuting to destinations like downtown on two wheels. The StarTran bus runs throughout the neighborhood, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln students ride free. Lincoln Airport is a 5-mile drive from Everett for trips out of town.
