Husker Pride soars on football weekends in Oak Hills
Proximity to an airport naturally brings noise worries, but in the Oak Hills neighborhood of Lincoln, a specific type of air traffic is actually anticipated each fall and cherished on college football gamedays. "One thing that people who live around here look forward to is the National Guard Black Hawk helicopter flyovers at the start of home Husker football games,'' said Josh Beyer, Realtor and owner of Capital City Realty Group, "The flight path is right over top of Oak Hills. It’s only about eight times a season, but it’s a big deal. People who live here but aren’t at the game hold cookouts in the neighborhood to watch the flyovers.”
Primarily a residential neighborhood in the western part of town, Oak Hills consists of about 900 homes built in the last 40 years. Yards range from quarter-acre to three-quarters of an acre. Tall hardwood trees, paved sidewalks and cul-de-sacs define the overall look and feel of Oak Hills. New apartment complexes and recently built townhouses are are evidence of growth within the neighborhood. "West Lincoln neighborhoods are increasingly popular thanks to their proximity to the airport and their competitive prices,” Beyer said, referring to adjacent Lincoln Airport.
And as for the more conventional and recurring airline jets' comings and goings, Beyer said the majority are smaller quieter models that don't typically make as much noise as their larger counterparts.

New townhouses and midcentury homes are sought after
Most homes in Oak Hills are split-levels or ranch styles that have sold from about $190,000 to $280,000 over the past year. Recently built townhouses have sold from about $290,000 to $350,000. Driving new home construction in Oak Hills is a planned commercial and residential mixed-use development near the airport as part of the West O Street Redevelopment Plan. Beyer says, “As this project moves forward, we expect to see more new home construction in and around Oak Hills and West Lincoln.”
