Wilderness Hills offers a convenient suburban Lincoln lifestyle

Wilderness Hills is a neatly laid-out community comprising two subdivisions on Lincoln’s southwestern outskirts. Residents enjoy proximity to shopping and dining along Yankee Hill Road and the Wilderness Park nature preserve. “Wilderness Hills is a newer development in southwest Lincoln,” says Realtor Bob Wayne of Nebraska Realty, who has sold several new builds in the neighborhood recently. He says the city is expanding in every direction, and buyers are drawn here and to other fast-growing areas for similar reasons: modern homes, highly rated schools and convenience to parks and commercial amenities. “Lincoln is just a pretty good city to live in, and you’ll feel that wherever you move.”

Wilderness Hills, Wilderness Ridge offer single-family and townhomes

Ranch-style homes with front-facing garages, clad in a mix of stone, stucco and wood siding, are common in the Wilderness Hills subdivision. They’re evenly spaced along wide, gently curving streets. Young necklace poplars and silver maples edge narrow garden beds, grassy front lawns and sidewalks throughout the area. The New Traditionals and ranch-style homes in the Wilderness Ridge community, west of 27th Street, have broad front lawns, mature trees and golf course views. Townhomes are available in both subdivisions, and apartments are available for rent in the Wilderness Hills South complex.

Single-family home prices start close to $440,000 and rise to about $770,000. Homes with more than 4,000 square feet can sell for between $835,000 and $1.1 million. Townhomes sell for between $330,000 and about $670,000. Wayne says that while Wilderness Hills homes are newer, Wilderness Ridge homes are typically more expensive. “You end up paying more for the view.”

Lincoln is vulnerable to tornadoes. Creeks in the area pose minimal flood risk. The CAP Index Crime Score for Wilderness Hills is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Highly rated Lincoln Public Schools

Lincoln Public Schools gets an A-minus from Niche and allows transfers, both in- and out-of-district, depending on capacity. Wilderness Hills is zoned to Adams Elementary, Scott Middle and Southwest High, all three of which earn A grades. The high school opened in 2002 as the first new school in Lincoln since 1968. It offers on- and off-campus dual-credit classes in partnership with Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Private options nearby include the Primrose School of Lincoln at Wilderness Hills, a daycare and preschool, and Acton Academy Lincoln, a Montessori-inspired elementary, middle and high school. Neither private school has a Niche grade.

Outdoor recreation at Wilderness Park, Wilderness Ridge Club & Resort

Wilderness Ridge Club & Resort is a private country club in the Wilderness Ridge community, with golf courses, outdoor pools and a clubhouse. Membership is required to use most amenities, but not to live in the community. Wilderness Park, just west of the neighborhood, is the city’s largest park, spanning the Salt Creek flood plain from Van Dorn Street to Saltillo Road. It serves as a conservation area and floodwater storage, and has over 30 miles of trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Horseback riding is permitted on the trails marked in red and green.

Near retailers, restaurants in the Wilderness Hills shopping center

The Wilderness Hills shopping center, off Yankee Hill Road, has Kohl’s, Aldi, Marshalls and HomeGoods. There’s also an Orangetheory Fitness, beauty salons, financial services offices and several eateries. The Mercato is a small regional chain butcher shop, known for fresh meats, baked goods and ready-made meals. It’s close to Tanner’s Bar & Grill, a pub-style American eatery, and Tavern 180, a popular steakhouse. Wayne says the Wilderness Ridge Club & Resort restaurant, The Lodge, is also a local favorite. “You don’t have to be a member to eat there. It’s a pretty cool space, they do events and stuff there, too,” he says of the hunting cabin-themed eatery.

Quick access to downtown, healthcare and Lincoln Airport

StarTran provides bus service to Lincoln. The South 13th route runs from stops on Yankee Hill Road north to downtown, less than 10 miles away. Health care facilities on the Bryan West Campus, including the Bryan Medical Center and Bryan West Campus Emergency Department, are also nearby. The top local employers are within about 8 miles of most homes. U.S. Route 77 connects northeast to Lincoln Airport, about 15 miles away. The joint public/military airport offers direct commercial flights to Denver and Chicago. Direct flights to Orlando will be available starting in December 2025.
