Living where the linden trees grow
Lindenhurst, named after the linden trees that once surrounded the village's original farmhouse, saw tremendous growth after the regional arrival of railroads and manufacturing factories. Today, the community has over 14,000 residents but retains a rustic and peaceful atmosphere. Sprawling forest preserves, marshlands and lakes weave through and around suburban subdivisions, imbuing every neighborhood with a connection to nature. Because of the village's residential focus, most residents head into busier cities, such as Libertyville and Gurnee, to work in healthcare, retail and customer service. Some people even make the 50-mile commute to downtown Chicago or Milwaukee for work.
Over 14,000 residents call the nature-clad peaceful atmosphere of Lindenhurst home.

Forests, fishing spots and freezing temps
Natural spaces are a significant part of life in Lindenhurst. Nearly 11 nature preserves are within 6 miles of the community, offering hundreds of acres of wetlands, woodlands and prairies. "I love being surrounded by forest preserves," Long says. "It's just nice to move away from the hustle and bustle of northern suburbs." Hastings Lake Forest Preserve's fishing pier is a favorite casting point for catching carp and largemouth bass. The McDonald Woods Forest Preserve connects to the regional Millennium Trail and the Grass Lake Road Bike Path. In the village, The Hastings YMCA offers alpine climbing towers, an indoor pool and community programs. The village is roughly 7 miles from Gurnee, where Great Wolf Lodge Resort and Six Flags Great America are located. Six Flags has over 100 outdoor roller coasters, while Great Wolf Lodge is an expansive indoor water park open year-round. Lindenhurst experiences heavy snowfall in winter. Roads are pre-treated with an environmentally friendly mixture called Beet-Heet to prevent ice from forming and refreezing.

New construction takes natural land into account
Waterfront homes, wooded lots and front-yard flower gardens are familiar sights in Lindenhurst. Common architectural styles include Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes, split-levels and custom homes. The village's median price is around $350,000, less than the national median. Several recently constructed subdivisions have also joined the village. Heritage Park offers townhomes surrounded by open fields, and Briargate is the village's first large-scale master-planned, Age-Restricted Community. Over 200 ranch-style homes can access a private clubhouse and forest preserve trails. Living in the village means protecting the area's delicate ecosystems. "A unique thing about Lindenhurst is our 50/50 payment programs for things like tree replacement and shoreline stabilization," says Karleen Long, assistant to the village administrator. "I think it's really important that even as we have new developments coming in, we still prioritize nature."

Shopping at Gurnee Mills as revitalization comes
Long shares that a revitalization project along Grand Avenue has brought more small businesses downtown, like a new cafe and sandwich shop. The district's Tax Incremental Financing designation and other incentive programs support incoming entrepreneurs. As the downtown grows, people visit shops and restaurants in Gurnee Mills, a large mall in a neighboring city.
Emily’s Pancake House is a new favorite among Lindenhurst locals for breakfast and lunch.

Taking the Metra into Chicago
Though Pace buses and Metra trains run throughout Lake County, Lindenhurst doesn't have access to public transportation. The nearest Metra stop is 3 miles away, offering high-speed transportation into Chicago. Highway 45 and Interstate 94, located 5 miles away, are primary thoroughfares. The village is undergoing several road updates, including the ongoing Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction Project. A massive resurfacing project was recently completed in 2024.
The village's first-ever Restaurant Week
Each August, the village hall buzzes with Lindenfest preparations. This multi-day celebration features carnival rides, live music and a parade, all organized by volunteers. In 2025, Lindenhurst hosted its first-ever Restaurant Week, which celebrates the local dining scene and attracts new customers to explore different cuisines.
Linden Police Department stays connected
The FBI reports both violent and property crime in Lindenhurst in 2022. The Lindenhurst Police Department stays active in the community through regular patrols and special services, like an Elderly Residents in Need program.

When you live in Venetian Village, you can have your own personal oasis right by the water. Properties may seem secluded, but the community stays close. “It’s a nice, quiet area where neighbors get along nicely,” says Shawn Schneider, a licensed real estate broker with Compass and long-time resident of Lake County. “They’re pretty darn friendly here.”
Venetian Village uniquely encompasses two forest preserves and four lakes within its neighborhood boundaries, giving the area a peaceful vacation-home vibe all year long. The streets themselves are very grid-like, and homes are typically surrounded by their own wooded areas. “It’s a very mature neighborhood that’s well-established with trees,” Schneider says.
Most of the homes in Venetian Village are either in the subdivision below Duck Farm Forest Preserve or the one in between Sand Lake and Miltmore Lake. You can find simple ranch-style homes and split-levels with garages for $145,000 to $350,000, depending on location. These properties are either lined up on a street of similar houses or in their own private wooded section of the neighborhood. Every now and then, Tudors and log cabin-inspired lakefront properties will pop up on the market.
Families in the area have a few options on where to send their children to school. B J Hooper Elementary School is in Lake Villa School District 41 and has an A-minus Niche Grade. Also in District 41, Palombi Middle School is known for its after-school enrichment programs like sign language and gardening that give its students more opportunities for learning. From there, your child can attend Grayslake North High School in District 127. The district itself was awarded Exemplary Status by the State of Illinois, and Grayslake High School has an A grade on Niche. With a 92% graduation rate, you can rest assured that your child is set up for success.
When you live in Venetian Village, outdoor exploration comes as easy as breathing. Duck Farm Forest Preserve contains scenic wetlands and countryside landscaping that protects local waterfowl and wildlife along Slough Lake. The dog park on the land is off-leash and open to homeowners in the neighborhood. Fourth Lake Forest Preserve surrounds Fourth Lake with a grove of pines and spruces, creating a beautiful overlook that hikers can access along the Millennium Trail. There are several ponds and wetland areas the farther you travel into the preserve. Sand Lake and Miltmore Lake are both open to residents for recreational boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Miltmore Lake Park even lets you go swimming in the water at a beach area that also has a playground. “You can go fishing in the summer, and ice fishing in the winter,” Schneider continues.
After a long day on the water, grab a bite to eat at Fourth Lake Resort Bar & Grille, a restaurant right by the beach that offers outdoor seating with stunning views of the water. Their bacon-topped pierogis are sure to hit the spot. For anything else you might need, Rollins Crossing is south of the neighborhood and has a Tony’s Fresh Market for groceries, plus plenty of retail stores and chain restaurants.
If you enjoy waking up every morning to peace and quiet, then Venetian Village offers the perfect amount of seclusion you’re looking for combined with limitless outdoor activities to keep you entertained.
