A former mill town with a vibrant community spirit in Androscoggin County
Lisbon Falls is a small village in Lisbon that embraces Moxie — in terms of both perseverance and the bittersweet soft drink that was declared Maine’s official beverage in 2005. In the 1880s, Mainer Dr. Augustin Thompson created the elixir in Massachusetts with gentian root, and when the FDA said it couldn’t be marketed as a medicine, his company pivoted to soda. The drink was never actually produced in Maine, but local business owner Frank Anicetti had such a passion for the soda that he sparked interest in Lisbon and eventually across the state. Every July, thousands dress up in bright orange T-shirts to mimic the neon soda cans for the Moxie Festival, a weekend with a two-hour-long parade, a Moxie chugging contest and fireworks. “It has a strong flavor, and everyone says you either love or hate it. But it’s folded into the community identity here,” says Pauline Gendron, who’s lived in Lisbon Falls since the 1970s. As residents drive through Lisbon Falls, they’ll see all the markers of a tranquil New England town — a historic Main Street with local restaurants, walking trails that wind through pine forests and alongside the Androscoggin River, and colonial-style homes from the early 20th century. Mills were once the cornerstone of Lisbon Falls, but after they closed, those in the neighborhood pivoted to commuting to larger cities while maintaining a supportive and vibrant community spirit.

Colonials, ranches and bi-levels on spacious lots
Much of Lisbon Falls has quiet, gridded streets lined with groves of trees and classic New England architecture. In the southern part of the neighborhood, closer to downtown and the Androscoggin River, there are bungalows and Colonial Revival from the early 1900s. These are usually priced between $300,000 and $420,000, depending on upgrades like modern appliances and windows. The rest of the neighborhood has meandering streets and homes that were built later. “Lisbon Falls had more planned developments in the 1970s, while Lisbon still had farms,” Gendron says. “Growing up in the ‘80s, it was still woods right around the corner from our house, and we would walk there to go pick blueberries and raspberries.” Bi-level and ranch-style homes built in the 1970s and ‘80s are usually on about a third of an acre of land. Prices for these homes fluctuate between $250,000 and $400,000.

Moxie-flavored dishes at local eateries in Lisbon Falls
Though it’s a relatively small area, contemporary restaurants line Main Street in downtown Lisbon Falls. “It’s grown and kept up with the times. McDonald's and Sam’s [a regional Italian restaurant] used to be our big places to go out to eat,” Gendron says. Frank’s Restaurant and Bar, which was named to honor Moxie-enthusiast Frank Anicetti, serves pub fare like poutine and burgers. The restaurant is decked out in Moxie memorabilia and features specialty menu items like wings with Moxie barbecue sauce and cocktails with the signature soda. Lisbon House of Pizza is another casual dining spot for Italian food, while Flux Restaurant and Bar offers elevated American fare, like fish and chips and tempura cauliflower, in a modern vibrant setting. Locals can stop in Olive Pit Brewing Company for a pint of craft beer or to gather at low-key events like trivia nights and open mic nights. In the summer, community members drive to the Big Dipper Ice Cream to order large scoops of ice cream. “They even make a Moxie-flavored ice cream there,” Gendron says. Residents can head to Food City, a regional supermarket, for groceries and household essentials. Lewiston, which is 10 miles northwest, has retail stores like Target and T.J. Maxx.
Community gatherings at the Worumbo Riverfront Event Center
The Moxie Festival every July is the area's largest event, but there are more frequent community gatherings throughout the year. Neighbors often get together at the Worumbo Riverfront Event Center, an open space by the Androscoggin River where the Worumbo Mill once stood. The mill produced wool until it shuttered operations in 1964, and the main building burned down in one of the state’s largest industrial fires in 1987. “They finally got around to tearing it down a few years ago to turn it into a gathering space, and we’ve had a lot more community events since then,” Gendron says. Every other week during the summer, food trucks park at the center so attendees can stroll around and enjoy snacks from local vendors. Vendors from the community set up gazebos every Sunday from June to October for the summer farmers market, where residents browse tables of fresh eggs, produce and handmade crafts.
