Industrial employers and farmland define Littlefield

Littlefield, the seat of Lamb County, is planted in the rolling plains of West Texas among irrigated farmlands. Agribusiness dominates the town, and cotton is the region's primary crop. Companies such as Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest and American Plant Food Corporation are important employers. Local pride is seen on the water tower boldly proclaiming, "Hometown of Waylon Jennings," and the Chamber of Commerce regularly honors neighbors with the Yard of the Week. Littlefield, incorporated in 1924, celebrates its roots with annual events. Homes in the area have a median sale price significantly lower than the national figure.

Commerce includes mostly regional and local businesses

While Littlefield isn't considered a major shopping destination, its locally operated businesses serve the community's everyday needs. Residents visit Gebo's hardware store and unique spots like J-Bar-N Boot Shop or Jo Jo's Attic. Groceries are available at Food King and United Supermarkets. First Baptist Church of Littlefield and South Plains Food Bank manage a food pantry stocked with donations from residents, nonprofits and area grocers. Industrial facilities, including a grain elevator and a sawmill, employ residents while supporting the region's agriculture.

Land and newer builds are alongside older homes

Littlefield contains primarily single-story brick houses with attached garages or covered carports. Wooden fences surround many lots while back alleyways show red clay and patches of grass. Most homes date to the 20th century although a handful of early-2000s builds are sold on the market. Land is also available for buyers looking to build from the ground up. Most move-in-ready houses range in price from $100,000 to $320,000. Homes in the area sell after an average of about 56 days, which is quicker than the national average.

Community festivals draw local crowds to the fairgrounds

The Littlefield Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture has managed the city's economic development since 1938. The Chamber hosts summer pool parties and ribbon-cuttings for recently opened businesses. The Flatland Music & Arts Festival is a premier event in the city that runs for four days in October. The family-friendly gathering features food truck vendors and a full lineup of music performances. The festival is held at the Littlefield Ag and Community Center Fairgrounds along with the Celebrate Littlefield event in June.

A new aquatic center joins the city's public spaces

Crescent Park forms a U-shaped layout amid residential streets and homes. The neighborhood space contains a playground, basketball courts and tennis courts. There's also an open field and paved walking path around the park's perimeter. Littlefield Aquatic Center is a $4.3 million outdoor haven that opened in 2022. The pool and waterslide attract locals and visitors from nearby towns. Residents can also visit the disc golf course at Laguna Park. The grounds host a Halloween Carnival and other events managed by the community organization, Our Place.

Learning in the Littlefield ISD

Littlefield Primary accepts prekindergarten to second grade students. The school has a B rating on Niche. Students in third to fifth grade attend Littlefield Elementary, then move on to Littlefield Junior High; both schools have C-plus ratings. Littlefield High receives a B-minus. The Littlefield Independent School District offers dual enrollment courses in addition to career and technical education pathways.

Highways connect to Levelland and Lubbock

U.S. Highways 84 and 385 intersect inside the area. Lamb Healthcare Center serves the community alongside Lamb Healthcare Family Medicine. Residents can get to Downtown Levelland in about 25 miles. Loop 289 in Lubbock is roughly 35 miles away, and the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport lies approximately 40 miles away.

Weather risks in Lamb County

The county has a history of severe weather, including thunderstorms that can result in damaging hail and torrential winds. Like much of West Texas, the community has a history of tornadoes. There is also a moderate risk of wildfires.
