Where the cows came home

About 8 miles from Baltimore, the Lochearn neighborhood is defined by its historic, charming residences, numerous woodland parks and a sense of community pride. The community dates to the 1870s when it was the roaming grounds of Devonshire cattle. Since then, Lochearn has become a home to countless generations of content, neighborly and outdoorsy residents. "The biggest appeal about Lochearn is the convenience of its location," says Broker Donnell Spivey, owner of Exit Spivey Professional Realty, who has sold properties in Baltimore County for over 30 years. "But when you get off the highway, it's a close-knit community you find."

A touch of Olmsted influence

Lochearn is "a stable homeowner community with a host of well-kept single-family homes," says Spivey. Lochearn's curved, tree-shaded streets and open-air grids both contain rows of vernacular architecture in a midcentury design, such as ranch-styles, split-levels and bilevels with second-story overhangs sitting on green grass lots. To Lochearn's north is Sudbrook Park, a historic housing development of Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods designed in the late 1880s by Frederick Law Olmsted, inventor of the parkway and landscape architecture. Some parts of town have recently seen townhomes go up. Single-family homes and newer townhouses in Lochearn tend to sell for between $225,000 and $315,000, though some do go for higher prices.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles Aplenty

"It's a good community for commuting and working," says Spivey. Employees of Baltimore County's largest employer – the Social Security Administration – have convenient proximity to their workplace in Lochearn. Other residents can make a straight shot into Baltimore City via Liberty Heights Avenue, which also can be taken to Northwest Hospital. Easy access to the Interstate 695 Beltway is available for trips to other parts of Baltimore County. And for frequent flyers, BWI Marshall Airport is roughly 17 miles south, accessible via highway.

Bird watching and disc golf

Known for world-class birdwatching, the 65-acre Villa Nova Park is a go-to spot for local ornithologists to peek at thrushes and Cape May warblers. Hikers also go there to pick up the Gywnn Falls Trail, a 22-mile network of multi-county hiking and biking trails. On the other side of town, Powder Mill Run Park is a beloved greenspace and playground where locals gather for activities such as tennis and basketball. Other smaller parks are scattered throughout town, such as Sudbrook Park's playground and adjacent disc golf course. On rainy days, an indoor space for basketball and tennis is located only a mile west of Lochearn at the Twin Lakes Racquet and Hoops Club in neighboring Milford Mill.

Pool parties and the Preakness Stakes

Lochearn has many community events, like multicultural potlucks and jazz brunch at the Lochearn Community Club Swimming Pool. Gwynn Oak Food and Music Festival is an annual free event in September packed with food vendors, music and raffles. Every third Saturday in May, locals gallop to nearby Pimlico Racetrack and watch the Preakness Stakes, one of the three thoroughbred horse races of the Triple Crown.

Lunch specials and Kosher delights

Liberty Road is lined with chain restaurants and stores for national brands. Visiting most locally owned or big box businesses requires a drive of less than a mile north to Reisterstown Road. When seeking a home-cooked meal, several grocery stores and a natural foods market are located along the commercial corridor, as are department stores, home improvement retailers and discount shops. Those looking to dine in can go for traditional kosher delicacies from Knish Shop or a discounted lunch special of Szechuan chicken from David Chu's China Bistro.
