Obetz-Lockbourne
Suburban Neighborhood in Lockbourne, Ohio
Franklin County 43137, 43207
Colorful trees & trims
From the classic American four-squares in Obetz to the historic homes of Lockbourne, southeastern residents rarely find a subdivision lacking colorful trees and trim. For between $200,000 and $400,000, ranch-style homes and split levels are dotted throughout the area, juxtaposing newer Craftsman builds and the occasional fixer-upper. “Affordable housing is more common in places like Obetz. It’s not a high-priced area,” Cary explains. “It’s a nice little community, and people like it that way.” Further north, developments like Greenhill Acres and Cambria supply bungalows and spacious vacant lots. Though most neighborhoods have sidewalks, those without still offer plenty of street parking and bike-friendly roads.Parks in every village
Lockbourne’s 2-mile Magnolia Trail in Locke Meadows Park is centuries old. A playground and basketball court accompany the trail, bordering the village’s intricate canal system. North, Hamilton Township Park provides access to Big Walnut Creek. A concession stand and pavilions for game guests accompany its fields, baseball diamond and playground. In Obetz, the Area 51 Disc Golf Course covers 31 acres with 18 holes. And off Obetz Road, the Scioto Southland Community Center provides everything from mobile produce markets to sports and fitness camps for kids. Closer to Route 104, the Marion Franklin Community Rec Center has pickleball courts and a swimming pool.Hamilton Local Schools
Students in Obetz and Lockbourne attend Hamilton Local Schools, nestled within the greater Hamilton Township. “Hamilton schools are a pretty good district,” Cary says. “It’s one of the reasons people move to the area.” Kindergartners through third graders attend Hamilton Elementary School. Annual math challenges are offered to all grades, with prizes for successful students. Hamilton Intermediate School enrolls grades 4-6, and both schools earn a B on Niche. Hamilton Middle School covers seventh and eighth grade. Students wrap up at Hamilton Township High School, which provides a dual enrollment program. Both schools also receive a B- rating on Niche.A song for zucchini
Obetz Zucchinifest is no joke, and Cary knows that. “I wrote a song about the zucchini festival once,” he says. “It’s their thing!” Between live music, wrestling matches, magic shows and zucchini-infused beer, locals go wild just in time for the harvest. In the off-season, South Drive-In Theater is a neat little spot playing the latest feature films for residents of all ages. And Fortress Obetz is an entertainment sports complex complete with a 6,500+ seat grandstand, state-of-the-art video boards and lively music events. Around the holidays, Bedford Falls Christmas Tree Farm is a Lockbourne gem where folks can cut their own trees.Reaching the city next door
Downtown Columbus is only 7 miles north of Obetz and 14 from Lockbourne. Route 23, High Street, is a direct highway into the city, though Obetz residents may rely on I-270 to reach it. Route 104, Frank-Refugee Expressway, connects locals to Route 33 and I-71, leading north toward Columbus and south toward Canal Winchester and Grove City, respectively. The village of Lockbourne borders Rickenbacker International Airport, though John Glenn Columbus International Airport is just 15-20 miles north. GREAT (Groveport Rickenbacker Employee Access Transit) shuttle service provides free rides for employees traveling to nearby industrial parks. Otherwise, the area remains car-dependent.Greasy spoons and metro vans
With High Street and I-270 as the region’s main thoroughfares, plenty of shopping and dining options are scattered between Obetz, Lockbourne and the greater southeast area. Residents can find a Walmart, Kroger and Aldi just off the interstate. Commercial restaurants like Wingstop and Tim Horton’s are within a mile radius of the hub. Portside Café is a greasy spoon near Lockbourne with a small-town diner feel. And though Southeast is filled with pizza spots, locals can grab a slice piled with pepperonis at Possum Pizza in Obetz. Off Route 104, Mission Coffee Co. is a trendy warehouse-style coffee shop featuring an international metro van outside for photo ops.
