Moxie will be a new home community with plenty of green space

Moxie is a planned neighborhood currently under construction just south of downtown Lockhart. Designed by Red Oak Development Group, the 689-acre project will feature a wide array of single-family home styles, an elementary and middle school and a retail area. The design is meant to encourage a greater sense of community and a focus on wellness, as it will have miles of trails along with parks and gathering spaces. The first phase of the buildout, which consists of over 400 lots, is underway with model homes expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.

A variety of home styles with multiple HOA amenities

Moxie will encompass multiple housing styles, including Craftsman, farmhouse, Tudor revival, European cottage and New traditional. Townhomes are also in the works. “We don’t necessarily put ourselves in a single box of a single architectural style, and that is on purpose; we want to embrace architectural diversity,” says Mike Miller, Executive Vice President of Real Estate and Community Development for Red Oak Development Group. Miller says Red Oak is encouraging builders to create homes with some “flair” such as colorful front doors and facades as well as using different materials in the build. “We're going to have a myriad of typologies we want to cater to the diverse demographic and families that are coming to the Lockhart market,” says Miller. “We don’t want to create a sea of sameness.”

Miller says that homes built in the first phase are expected to start in the mid to low $300,000. Once it is done, prices will range from $250,000 to over $750,000. Miller says the homeowners association is meant to protect the vision of the neighborhood and “not overregulate daily life.” He says that fee prices are still being worked out, but amenities will include internet service and access to its parks and trails.

Homes will be on winding streets with some tree cover and plenty of walkability. Miller says it will be assembled in several 12-to-18-month phases, lasting over 10 years, and will total around 2,200 units.

Elementary and Middle school will be in Moxie

Public school students will be zoned to the Lockhart Independent School District, which does allow for campus-to-campus or out-of-district transfers. A middle school is currently being built, while an elementary school is also part of future development.

Trails and natural spaces will be all over the area

Walkability will be one of the core features of Moxie. “It’s a walkable, people-centric community where daily life naturally spills into the outdoors,” Miller says. The area will have a network of trails throughout the complex. Several parks, a greenbelt and pools will also be constructed. Developers are also planning to bring back a buried watercourse to life to release pressure on the local water system and provide a wildlife habitat.

This area is also close to Lockhart State Park, which has a nine-hole golf course, fishing spots, a campsite and trails. Lockhart City Park features a baseball diamond, a skatepark and multipurpose fields.

Retail and restaurants will come online in the future

Miller says the locale will have a retail area along with a grab-and-go restaurant and live-work units. More shopping is in Lockhart, with Colorado Street containing a Poco Loco Supermercado and an H-E-B. Downtown also has several boutiques.
Downtown Lockhart has multiple restaurants, including:

  • Terry Black’s Barbecue, serving a variety of smoked meats and sides
  • Old Pal Bar offers burgers, sandwiches and fried chicken
  • Commerce Cafe has brunch items and pasta dishes
  • Chaparral Cantina features craft cocktails and coffee drinks

Access to downtown Austin and the airport

Moxie will be car-dependent. Route 130 leads to downtown Austin, roughly 44 miles north. Austin-Bergstrom International is around 35 miles away. CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital-San Marcos is an estimated 28 miles away.
