Lockport offers small-town living on Bayou Lafourche
Lockport is a small community of 2,400 people along Bayou Lafourche that has plenty of single-family homes and provides access to the fishing and sporting areas among the marshlands of southern Louisiana. “[It’s] very small…everybody knows everybody. If you’re driving through it and you blink, you might miss it,” says Jordan Parr, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Bayou Partners who was born and raised in Lockport. “Lockport on its own is kind of like one big family.”
Once a center for shipping, the canals of Bayou Lafourche are still a center for shipbuilding, with the Bollinger Shipyards a major employer. The town is also a center for agriculture and cattle production.
Multiple single-family home styles with no HOAs
Homes in Lockport include manufactured, ranch-styles, bungalows, cottage-styles and New Traditionals. The median home price is over $166,000, lower than the national and state medians. Some homes can reach above $1 million. However, inventory tends to move more slowly, spending an average of 118 days on the market, higher than the national average of 52 days. Parr says that there is no HOA activity.
Properties are typically on gridded streets with lots smaller than the national average. Live oaks can accent some lawns, but homes have little tree cover. Some housing can also be on Bayou Lafourche and the canals, but do not have private docks. Parr says that Lockport mainly consists of families that have lived there for generations and primarily attracts people who have previously lived in the area and moved back.
Higher-ranked elementary and middle schools in Lockport
Students can attend the Lafourche Parish School District, graded B on Niche. The district allows charter school transfers, open enrollment and out-of-district transfers if space is available. “That’s probably the best part about Lockport is the school district,” says Parr.
Students can start at B-plus-rated Lockport Lower Elementary School for kindergarten through second grade and continue to Lockport Upper Elementary, earning a B-plus, for third through fifth grades. Lockport Middle is given a B-plus, while Central Lafourche High School has a B and offers dual enrollment classes with Nicholls State University and Fletcher Community College.
Outdoor fun along the bayou or in nearby lakes with festivals nearby
Bayou Side Park features a walking trail, playground, fishing spots and a boat launch. There are also baseball diamonds and tennis courts at the corner of Church Street and Columbus Street. Lockport Recreation is an indoor facility for basketball, volleyball and meeting space. The Lockport Elevated Wetlands Boardwalk extends into the local swamps, allowing nature viewing. Lake Fields, west of the town, has more fishing and bird-watching locations.
The Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building has artifacts on the local boating industry. The Bayou Playhouse organizes theatre productions. Nearby events include the annual La Fete Du Monde festival in Raceland, 6 miles north, featuring Cajun food, carnival games and live music.
Dining and shopping on Crescent Avenue
Most restaurants are located along Crescent Avenue. Blackie’s Seafood Restaurant serves Po-Boy sandwiches and Cajun classics such as gumbo. Kajun Twist & Grill has seafood and sandwiches. La Terraza offers Mexican fare.
Rouses Market is on Crescent Avenue, along with several small convenience stores. More big box retailers are north in Raceland or 18 miles southwest in Houma.
Flooding and storms can pose a risk
Maps show that flooding can be a risk. Severe storms and hurricanes can also be a factor, with Hurricane Ida impacting the city in 2020. Animals such as alligators can also be present.
Health care, New Orleans and the airport are reachable by car
The city has no public transit connections and is car-dependent. Highway 1 connects to U.S. Highway 90 7 miles north of Lockport. U.S. 90 leads to New Orleans, roughly 50 miles north. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is 37 miles north. There are several clinics in town, but Ochsner St. Anne Hospital is 5 miles north.
