Manufacturing jobs bring residents to this artsy Indiana city
Logansport, Indiana, was a city of about 18,000 people at the time of the 2020 census. Lifelong resident, Realtor and owner of Schwering Realty, Stephen Schwering, says the city contains a mix of residents: those who grew up in Logansport and those who moved to the city for employment opportunities in the manufacturing, healthcare or education fields. “People move to Logansport because they’re coming here to work,” he says. “We have a large meatpacking plant and several other successful plants, as well as a great hospital and a wonderful school organization. We have good restaurants and live music venues. It’s a beautiful area with two rivers and beautiful old buildings downtown that people are making good use of, and we’ve got a fairly large art community for our size. We don’t have a lot of people bouncing around because everything’s pretty good around here.”

Low housing prices in Logansport
Ranch-styles and farmhouse designs are common in Logansport, and the city has a median sales price of $155,000, which is about $250,000 less than the national median. “You can probably buy more house in Logansport for a lower price than in most areas in the country,” Schwering says. “We [even] find people moving to Logansport that don’t mind driving an hour to work because the prices are much more reasonable.” Logansport is within 40 miles, or about an hour's drive of neighboring cities like Lafayette, which is also home to a variety of pharmaceutical and automotive and equipment manufacturers, like Caterpillar.

Parks, music and the Indiana Museum of Art
Logansport has 12 parks, a public pool and a municipal golf course. The city manages seven trails, and there are three additional trails in Logansport that local organizations manage. “We’re a very art- and music-oriented community,” Schwering says. “We have a very eclectic mix of music, everything from a piano guy who runs around town to rock bands and everything in between.” Schwering notes that many city parks double as outdoor music venues, while local restaurants become live music venues at night. The city plans to open its first art museum, the Indiana Museum of Art, in downtown Logansport in 2025.

Logansport Community School Corporation and Ivy Tech Community College
The Logansport Community School Corporation earns a B rating from Niche. “Our school corporation has a very high-end auditorium that’s used for plays and concerts. It’s incredible,” Schwering says. “We have good arts programs in the school. We also have a culinary program which is starting to put out some young chefs. I know a kid working at Amelio’s who’s leaving in September to go culinary school in New York, and he started taking classes at the high school.” Ivy Tech Community College also has a campus in Logansport and offers in-person classes, admissions assistance and academic advising.

Downtown dining, DORA and the Logansport Farmers Market
Schwering says that Amelio’s On The River, a riverside steakhouse and Italian restaurant, is the best restaurant in town and also recommends Bonus Pints, Old Style and the Science Project Brewing Company, all newer restaurants that double as music venues. He recommends Black Dog Coffee to start the morning and U-Know Pizza & Sandwich Shop or Jerry’s Pizzeria for pizza. Downtown Logansport operates as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, or DORA, from 2nd Street to 7th Street and between the Eel and Wabash rivers. DORA is open for business every day from 11 a.m. to midnight, meaning patrons can walk around with open containers of alcohol. “That way, you can walk around with your drink and enjoy all the live music venues,” Schwering says. He goes on to praise the city’s grocery selection, which includes everything from the Logansport Farmers Market to the family-owned D&R Fruit Market to chain grocery stores. “Even our Martin’s, which is a chain, is fantastic,” he says.

Weather and the Logansport Police Department
Logansport has average high temperatures in the 80s during the summer and average low temperatures in the teens throughout the winter. This city's location, between the Wabash and Eel rivers, also means it is susceptible to flooding. While the government has implemented control damns to mitigate risks, severe weather can still cause flash floods. FBI data shows that the Logansport Police Department’s reported property crime rate has steadily declined since 2019, while its violent crime rate has remained about the same.
Cass Area Transit and Fort Wayne International Airport
“We’re kind of a self-contained community in the fact that we do as many things in town as we can,” Schwering says. “Most of the stuff we need is right here in Logansport.” U.S. Route 35, U.S. Route 24 and Indiana State Road 25 run through Logansport, while the Cass Area Transit system operates fixed bus routes that run every Monday through Saturday. Fort Wayne International Airport is the closest airport, 71 miles northeast.
Cass County 4-H Fair and the Summer Sundown Music Series
Each July, the weeklong Cass County 4-H Fair is held in Logansport. The event includes livestock shows, carnival rides, food and games. In downtown Logansport, “Little Turtle Waterway is basically an area on the river made for festivals,” Schwering says. “There are art festivals, food festivals. The community owns a mobile stage that gets used in different places." In the summer, the Cass County Arts Alliance hosts the Summer Sundown Music Series with weekly concerts on Sunday evenings at various outdoor venues around the city, including Huston Park, Fairview Park and Little Turtle Waterway.
