A unique multicultural community

Once a summer seaside resort for the rich and famous, Elberon has seen its share of visiting celebrities, presidents and industrial tycoons over the last century. By the late 1960s, Sephardic Jews from Brooklyn, who would spend summers in Bradley Beach to the south, began flocking to and buying homes in nearby towns like Elberon. Today, it is common to see synagogues, kosher delis and Jewish grocers alongside other businesses as many of the same Jewish families who originally moved to the area continue to buy properties in this unique multicultural enclave along the Jersey Shore.

Kosher faves and Latin influence

For residents that follow a strict kosher diet, the nearest grocery stores are Freddy’s on Monmouth and Ouri’s Market on Norwood Avenue. There’s also a Shop & Shop supermarket, along with other chain stores, in Long Branch. Most neighborhood restaurants are in and around these markets, such as the Hot Bagel Bakery, which serves Jewish-style bagels near Freddy’s. Retro Grill New Jersey, a kosher sandwich shop, is around the corner from Ouri’s. And 656 Ocean, more of a refined kosher restaurant, is next to Stingers Diner, a casual burger place, a block from the Stop & Shop. The farther north residents venture, the more ethnic and diverse the dining options, such as Cuca Libre, a Brazilian restaurant on West End Avenue, and Don Beto’s, a Salvadoran pupuseria on Memorial Parkway.

Celebrate the waves

Oceanfest on Long Branch Beach is an Independence Day celebration that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators from the mid-Atlantic. This family-friendly event features food vendors, a sand-castle contest, games, kiddie rides and face painting, performers of all kinds and professional fireworks on the beach after dark.

Low-lying single family units alongside condos

The Elberon neighborhood feature ranch-style houses, Cape Cods, historic colonials and newer large contemporaries. Because of the high demand for housing in the area, prices are often higher — from $775,000 to as much as $8 million — than areas further inland. “Homes tend to sell quickly in Elberon,” says David Dorfman, an associate broker with Gilman Commercial Realty who has lived in nearby Ocean Township for 52 years. “Buyers in this area often have large extended families. They may buy up two or three properties next to each other and turn them into modern summer homes.” In fact, listings with multiple homes being sold together are not uncommon. Condos are also available in the $325,000 to $2.2 million range.

Private beach clubs

Public beaches in Long Beach and Asbury Park offer boardwalks with shops, entertainment venues and many dining options. “In between are homes and private beach clubs that have been around for decades,” Dorfman says. These are member-owned organizations, such as the Ocean Beach Club, Elberon Bathing Club and Deal Casino Beach Club. Playgrounds and baseball fields are never more than a short walk away at places like Elberon Park and Van Court Park.
