Natural beauty just outside of urban excitement

Flanked by the Passaic River and the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the township of Long Hill is a blend of urban access and suburban serenity. Long Hill is split into three communities, each with its own train station and personality. Sitting around 20 miles from Newark and just an hour-long train ride from New York City, Long Hill allows for an escape from the busyness of its neighbors at the end of the day. “This is the kind of place where kids grow up, leave, and then come back to a few years later,” says Theresa Filippone, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker and longtime resident of the area. “It’s charm really grabs a hold of people.”

High demand, low stock

Homes in Long Hill, regardless of which of the three communities is in question, reflect an old-school, historic character. Colonials and ranch styles are most common, with traditional styles making up nearly all the inventory. “Long Hill is very sought-after,” says Filippone. “The problem is, the inventory just doesn’t match the interest – people hold on to their homes here.” Ranch style builds typically start at around $425,000, while prices for large custom builds or homes built before the 20th century can reach as high as $1.2 million. Thanks to the more spread-out nature of Long Hill, homebuyers can expect large yards, driveways and even garages.

The Stirling Hotel and Stirling Tavern are two local favorites

Locals getting off the train at Stirling Station can take a short walk to the Stirling Hotel for smoked brisket and craft brews. The restaurant, which features an outdoor beer garden, is a staple of the community – along with the Stirling Tavern. 12 Islands Greek Taverna offers up authentic Greek fare, while the O’Bagel Balgelry and Deli has classic New Jersey bagels. Residents looking to restock the pantry can do so at ShopRite, while retail options include TJ Maxx and HomeGoods. For more retail therapy, nearby Bridgewater Mall sits a little less than 20 miles away.

Plenty of train and highway access

Residents can easily walk to any of the three train stations in town, while I-287 means the Jersey Shore is roughly an hour away via car. Manhattan sits 35 miles away, making it a straightforward commute via Route 76 – though, as with everything in the area, traffic still depends on time of day.
