Living surrounded by trees, recreation and dining
In the middle of Long Island lies Coram, a hamlet established in 1677 that’s survived historic wars and is now home to a diverse population. “Coram is more than just a place to live; it's a community where you can thrive and create lasting memories with your family. We are committed to fostering an environment where new residents feel welcomed and existing residents feel proud to call Coram home. I grew up here, and when I was looking to buy a home for my family, I chose to remain in Coram,” says Kareem Nugdalla, a resident here for over 33 years and president of the Coram Civic Association. Residents here have easy access to public parks, locally owned restaurants and shops along Middle Country Road. While this hamlet is primarily residential, homeowners don’t have to travel far to find ways to get out of the house for some fun with friends or family.

Coram has ranches, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals
Coram features single-family homes, condos and apartments to house its over 10,0000 residents. Condos can fetch anywhere from $215,000 to upwards of $400,000, while four-bedroom houses with Cape Cod, Colonial Revival or ranch-style designs can sell for $600,000 to $800,000. Homeowners often get attached garages and paved driveways, and the lack of sidewalks means houses have large yards that extend out toward the streets. The Pine Ridge Golf Club course surrounds The Point at Pine Ridge apartments, while tall, thick trees border Fairfield Knolls South. No matter where residents live, they’re often 3 miles away from a golf course, restaurant or park.
“Coram has a cozy hometown feel with nearby outdoor adventures, like beaches, 40 minutes away. There are lots of condo developments there, too, and they have a luxury feel. You also don’t really have to worry about flooding here like you do living closer to the beaches," says Jennifer Nyx, a Keller Williams Realtor with over six years of experience.
Colonial revival style homes are clustered in certain parts of Coram.
The hi-ranch style homes are very popular in Coram especially with its often hilly terrain.

Getting college credits at Longwood High
“In Coram, we believe our children are the future, and with the support of the Longwood School District, we are confident that this future is bright. This commitment to educational excellence is just another reason why families find Coram an attractive place to live,” says Nugdalla. Kids usually start out at the B-rated Coram Elementary School before transitioning to Longwood Middle and later Longwood High, both earning B-plus ratings from Niche. Longwood High students, known as the Longwood Lions, can sign up for dual enrollment courses to jumpstart their college careers or join the 2023 champion runner-up girls’ bowling team. Part of Coram falls in the Middle Country Central School District, so kids in the western half of Coram might attend New Lane Memorial Elementary and move on to other nearby Middle Country Central schools.
Longwood Middle School is located off of Yaphank Middle Island Rd.

Coram Diner has lunch and dinner covered
Restaurants, shops and recreation line Middle Country Road, a major thoroughfare that runs through the heart of Coram. Many residents stay loyal to locally owned restaurants like Popei's Clam Bar, which is the place to go for steaks, burgers, seafood and live music. Tainos Cafe & Lounge has a full menu of Caribbean and Latin American dishes. The Clay Oven has a buffet of halal Indian dishes customers can enjoy by dining in or ordering out. “Our community's offerings reflect the diversity of our community, with restaurants offering an array of flavors from around the world,” Nugdalla says. When locals need to stock up on groceries, they visit the Lidl in Selden Plaza or the Stop & Shop in Coram Plaza. However, residents can also head north to Port Plaza to find gourmet ingredients at Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace. Other stores such as Home Depot, Rainbow Shops and Family Dollar fill Coram Plaza.

The Coram Civic Association works to keep the community connected with annual events such as its summer concert series and Christmas tree lighting. Members also plan to introduce more ways to bring neighbors together with menorah lightings and Ramadan events. Residents can also support their local firefighters by attending the Fired-Up Fundraiser and Car Show in June or the Halloween Spooktacular Haunted Car Show in October.
Commuting on the Ronkonkoma railroad
Coram is less than 10 miles from the Ronkonkoma station, the first stop on the Ronkonkoma line and one of the most traveled routes on the Long Island Rail Road. “The Ronkonkoma railroad is like an express line to the city. Trains come in almost every hour, so it’s quicker than the Port Jefferson Station,” Nyx says.
Ronkonkoma LIRR Station, while not the closest to Coram, is indeed the most express line.

Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

When I was seeking a job early last year, I applied to several local grocery stores, and only one of them even called me back. Aside from small businesses, there is not too much commercial activity. The area is more of a residential area. People commute to work from our area out west towards the city.

I have lived in Coram my whole life. For me, it is a great, diverse city. I have no complaint living in the part of Coram that I live in. I have lived on the opposite side of Coram for quite a few years and I much prefer where I live because it seems safer. Overall, I think that Coram is a great place that may get a bad wrap. I would raise a family here.

We get flooding near the coast but not too much in central Suffolk. The snowstorms were twice a week for the beginning of 2015 and it was great. Everything shuts down and everyone enjoys the snow on their quads, snowmobiles and Jeeps.
