Attached townhomes, ranches and large colonial revivals

Some homes are part of gated country club developments with golf courses like Wind Watch or Stonebridge and fetch a premium.Blydenburgh County and Connetquot River State parks
Hauppauge is surrounded by large nature preserves. Blydenburgh County Park is a dense woodland that leads into the 543-acre Caleb Smith State Park, a green lung that eventually connects to the Long Island Sound. There are miles of hiking trails, playgrounds, picnicking areas and lakes for canoeing or fishing. Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve in nearby Commack incorporates a bird habitat with baseball fields. The 3,473 Connetquot River State Park Preserve, situated between the nearby hamlets of Central Islip and Bohemia, is a massive green space with equestrian trails and historic buildings.Small top-ranked schools in the Hauppauge District
Students get their education in the Hauppauge School District, which tends to have smaller schools and class sizes. Among three elementary schools, Bretton Woods has an overall A-score from Niche and a favorable 10 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Hauppauge Middle also has an A-score, while Hauppauge High maintains an overall A-minus ratio. “The district only has 1,100 students,” Daddio says. “There’s real school spirit and student-led community-oriented initiatives.” The Hauppauge Youth Organization supports local football, soccer, baseball and LAX game teams.
The Long Island Rail Road and Expressway
The Long Island Expressway runs along Hauppauge's southern edge and is a straight shot into New York City. The drive takes an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. Residents can also commute into the city using the Long Island Rail Road from stations in Central Islip, which has a large parking facility, and Deer Park. The trip takes approximately an hour and 20 minutes.Main Street Smithtown and the Smith Haven Mall
Though the hamlet is mostly residential, there’s a small but convenient shopping center at the intersection of New York State routes 347 and 111 that includes a ShopRite grocery store and Panera Bread sandwich shop. Hauppauge has a peppering of restaurants, including A & A Sushi House and Branchinelli's Pizza & Restaurant. Residents do most of their shopping along Main Street Smithtown, which is only a five to 10-minute drive from most homes. The commercial district has a wide range of independent and chain shops. A bit further east, Lake Grove’s Smith Town Mall has over 130 name-brand stores. Central Islip Town Center has a Target and The Home Depot. East Islip and Islip proper have a combined downtown with small owner-operated businesses.
