Central Long Island suburb with low taxes

Located in central Long Island, Hauppauge is a residential hamlet with a tight-knit community atmosphere. “It reaps the benefits of being in both Smithtown and Islip townships,” says Christine Daddio, an agent with Howard Hanna Coach Realtors and a resident of neighboring Smithtown. Verdant nature preserves, small class-sized schools, reliable transportation links and proximity to thriving downtowns are major draws. Residents also have the advantage of paying property taxes that are 20% to 30% lower than surrounding areas because Hauppauge Business Park, one of the largest complexes of its kind on the East Coast, foots most of the bill.

In between, postwar bungalows and ranches range from $320,000 to $750,000, depending on size and condition. Small top-ranked schools in the Hauppauge District

Students get their education in the Hauppauge School District, which tends to have smaller schools and class sizes. Among three elementary schools, Bretton Woods has an overall A-score from Niche and a favorable 10 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Hauppauge Middle also has an A-score, while Hauppauge High maintains an overall A-minus ratio. “The district only has 1,100 students,” Daddio says. “There’s real school spirit and student-led community-oriented initiatives.” The Hauppauge Youth Organization supports local football, soccer, baseball and LAX game teams.

Blydenburgh County and Connetquot River State parks

Hauppauge is surrounded by large nature preserves. Blydenburgh County Park is a dense woodland that leads into the 543-acre Caleb Smith State Park, a green lung that eventually connects to the Long Island Sound. There are miles of hiking trails, playgrounds, picnicking areas and lakes for canoeing or fishing. Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve in nearby Commack incorporates a bird habitat with baseball fields. The 3,473 Connetquot River State Park Preserve, situated between the nearby hamlets of Central Islip and Bohemia, is a massive green space with equestrian trails and historic buildings.

Main Street Smithtown and the Smith Haven Mall

Though the hamlet is mostly residential, there’s a small but convenient shopping center at the intersection of New York State routes 347 and 111 that includes a ShopRite grocery store and Panera Bread sandwich shop. Hauppauge has a peppering of restaurants, including A & A Sushi House and Branchinelli's Pizza & Restaurant. Residents do most of their shopping along Main Street Smithtown, which is only a five to 10-minute drive from most homes. The commercial district has a wide range of independent and chain shops. A bit further east, Lake Grove’s Smith Town Mall has over 130 name-brand stores. Central Islip Town Center has a Target and The Home Depot. East Islip and Islip proper have a combined downtown with small owner-operated businesses.

The Long Island Rail Road and Expressway

The Long Island Expressway runs along Hauppauge's southern edge and is a straight shot into New York City. The drive takes an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. Residents can also commute into the city using the Long Island Rail Road from stations in Central Islip, which has a large parking facility, and Deer Park. The trip takes approximately an hour and 20 minutes.

I think that there is no real night life except for Jake's 58 Casino which is both a positive and a negative. More places need to be opened, and there is a lack of diversity.

Compared to other places the neighborhood is very safe and quiet. The schools are within close proximity of where the students live. Most people are generally friendly people. Yes I would choose to live there again if I could. There's never any traffic to deal with. The neighborhood is perfect for riding a bike or walking a dog.
