Huntington: a vibrant beach community with a bustling Main Street

In many waterfront communities, the water understandably takes center stage. After all, it’s hard to beat gorgeous views and coasts lined with sandy beaches and marinas. Edging Huntington Harbor, Huntington checks those boxes; activities like swimming, kayaking and boating are always within reach. Even beyond its own harbor and local beach, the community belongs to the bigger Town of Huntington, granting residents access to five harbors and nine beaches. Despite all this, Huntington’s waterfront lifestyle doesn’t get center stage — it shares it with a trendy, bustling downtown that draws people from miles around. “Huntington has an extremely vibrant downtown village area, so it sort of resembles city life, but you’re still in suburbia,” says Gina DeMaio, a licensed real estate salesperson at Berkshire Hathaway who has sold homes here for about six years. “It’s very, very vibrant. We have a tremendous amount of restaurants, bars — there’s the Paramount, which is a theater. It’s really just a great place.”

While Huntington’s walkable downtown gives parts of it an almost urban atmosphere, it’s still known for its community-driven spirit. “Everybody has their favorite places and it’s definitely a Cheers type of feeling where you can walk into your favorite spots that you love,” says Kieran Rodgers, a real estate salesperson and the team leader of Team Rodgers at The Agency who has sold homes in the area for two years, worked as a mortgage banker for about two decades and has lived nearby for nearly 40 years. “You know the bartender, you know the owner. ... It does feel like everybody knows everybody.”

Main Street is a destination for shopping, dining and entertainment

Huntington’s walkable downtown is known for its independent boutiques. Mitchells is a high-end shop for men and women, and Kate & Hale sells trendy women’s apparel. Around the corner is The Next Chapter, Long Island’s largest independent bookstore. In addition to selling the latest tomes, it hosts events from indoor winter markets to wellness classes. Catpurrccinos serves craft coffee and food in the company of adoptable cats, and Main St. Board Game Café gives guests space to connect through a blend of caffeine and games like Catan.

Huntington’s local restaurants and bars are just as well-known — as is its nightlife in general, which Rodgers says is very lively. The Shed offers brunch favorites as well as dinner, Munday’s is a retro-style diner that’s been serving the community for over 100 years and Prime is an upscale American restaurant with water views. “One of my favorite spots is definitely Jonathan’s Ristorante,” Rodgers says. “That’s Italian. They have homemade pasta over there, and it’s a staple for a lot of people.” Six Harbors Brewing Company sells beer directly and has a tap room where dogs and kids are welcome. A fun night out could also include a show at The Paramount. The well-known venue hosts concerts and comedy shows from a mix of local performers, tribute acts and big names themselves. Ed Sheeran, Billy Joel and the Steve Miller Band have all performed here. Downtown parking can be rough, so Rodgers recommends getting there early, especially before concerts. For groceries, locals head to Wild by Nature or Stop & Shop.

Beaches and greenspace surrounding The Heckscher Museum of Art

Huntington Harbor is lined with marinas and yacht clubs, and many residents own boats. “There is no shortage of marinas on the North Shore, especially in this area, so there’s definitely a lot of boating that goes on,” Rodgers says. “A lot of different areas to park your boat, a lot of kayaking.” Rodgers says people love to take their boats up to the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse — an unusually squat Beau Arts lighthouse built on a little dot of land in the middle of the harbor in 1857.

Gold Star Beach Park is a little beach where locals relax in the sand, swim in the harbor or launch kayaks. At the heart of Huntington, Heckscher Park has 18 acres full of athletic spaces, a huge playground and walking trails surrounding a pond. “Every day I walk about 3 miles there just to reset my brain,” Rodgers says. “They have ducks, they have geese, they have swans and turtles and everything else. When you put a pond in the middle of a track, it’s just so easy to relax and take it all in and get away from your cell phone.” The park also has an outdoor stage for summer concerts and The Heckscher Museum of Art, which is home to about 2,500 pieces. There are a few smaller parks in Huntington and golfers can choose between Huntington Crescent Club and Huntington Country Club.

Live music and holiday events that draw thousands

Beyond regular events and shows at The Paramount, Huntington has plenty of other events year-round. Many revolve around music, especially during the summer. The Huntington Summer Arts Festival hosts more than 40 free musical performances in Heckscher Park starting in June, and Rodgers says he’s seen about 1,000 people at its outdoor stage for concerts. The annual Huntington Lighthouse Music Fest is also a popular event. “The only way to get to the lighthouse is by boat, so everybody that has a boat is on it, and the boats are packed out and everybody goes to the concert,” Rodgers says. “The people who are entertaining are on the lighthouse. You just park your boat, and everybody just circles around and docks up and that’s that.” The Long Island Fall Festival brings the carnival and more live music to Heckscher Park, and the Huntington Holiday Spectacular kicks off in late November with a parade and tree lighting ceremony that draws thousands from surrounding communities. DeMaio says that Wall Street, one of Huntington’s main roads, is closed to cars for the entirety of the event — from just after Thanksgiving to just after New Years. “There’s hot cocoa and vendors, and people come from all over Long Island just to see the tree there,” DeMaio says. The community’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade claims to be the longest-running on Long Island and also draws a huge crowd.

Small Capes starting at $650,000 in Huntington

Despite its downtown, Huntington has primarily single-family homes. The design of these homes include little Cape Cods and ranch-style houses, larger new traditionals and a range of colonial styles, from Colonial Revivals to Garrison Colonials. Small starter homes typically start around $650,000, but even inland homes can climb to $2.5 million if they’re large, updated and have an acre or more of land. Homes by the water are not quite directly on it; they overlook it, but are separated from it by Shore Road. These houses still come at a premium, costing between $1 million and $4 million. There are a few co-ops and condos in Huntington, which usually cost between $380,000 and $550,000.

The impacts of storms, hurricane season

Hurricane season and other severe storms can impact Huntington, bringing a severe risk of high winds and a moderate risk of flooding. Although it’s right on the bay, Shore Road provides a bit of a buffer to most homes near the water, so roads are more likely to flood than homes. Getting insurance to protect against storm damage helps mitigate these risks.

Reaching major highways, nearby LIRR station

Huntington’s Main Street is also known as state Route 25A. New York Avenue, or state Route 110, also runs through the community, but I-495, or the Long Island Expressway, is about 15 miles from its center. Just over a mile from Huntington’s downtown, Huntington Station is a major hub on the Long Island Rail Road, with stops at both Penn Station and Grand Central Station in Manhattan. The trip takes about an hour and 10 minutes. Huntington Hospital is located right in the community, keeping medical care close. Long Island MacArthur Airport is 28 miles away and John F. Kennedy International Airport is 33 miles away.
