North New Hyde Park

Three top-rated school districts
Lau says the three school districts that serve North New Hyde Park are some of the major draws to the area. The New Hyde Park-Garden City Union Free School District covers the southeast side, where kids attend the A-rated Hillside Grade School for prekindergarten through sixth grade before transitioning to the A-rated New Hyde Park Memorial High School. The Great Neck Public Schools District is in the northern half of the neighborhood. Students here start at the Early Childhood Center, which earns an A, for prekindergarten and kindergarten. Next is Lakeville Elementary School, Great Neck South Middle School and then Great Neck South High School. All three get A-plus ratings. A small portion of the northeast area is in the Herricks Union Free School District. Notre Dame School is a private Catholic institution with kindergarten through eighth-grade classes.Single-family homes from the $900,000s
Cape Cods, raised ranch-styles and Colonial Revival homes make up the neighborhood. Most hover around the $900,000 mark, but the prices range from $700,000 to over $1.5 million. Single-family homes have large front and backyards, narrow sidewalks out front and long paved driveways. Residents living in homes without attached garages park in the driveway or street. Some multifamily options line Langdale Street, with one- and two-bedroom units selling for $225,000 to $375,000. Anyone interested in moving here has to act fast, as homes don’t usually spend more than a month on the market. “If I look at the demographic of the people whose homes I’ve been selling, they’ve been here since they were children and got the homes from their parents and stayed,” Lau says. “And people live for a long time here. The guy across the street was 100 years old, and I sold a home for a woman around the corner who was about 100 years old.”Ways to commute into Queens or Manhattan
The New Hyde Park station connects commuters to the Long Island Rail Road, which leads east farther into Long Island and west all the way to Penn Station. A trip to Manhattan takes roughly 40 minutes and requires no train hopping. Hillside Avenue splits the neighborhood and leads into Queens. “We can be from here to Flushing/Queens within 20 minutes. Driving from here to Manhattan takes 30 minutes without traffic, but of course, there’s always traffic,” Lau says. MTA buses run along New Hyde Park Road and take travelers to the Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Cohen Children's Medical Center. “Seniors stay here for so long because the hospitals are closeby. They have their doctors five minutes away.” Notre Dame Church has been a neighborhood landmark since 1959. Newer religious institutions include the Jain Temple of New York and the Hillside Islamic Center.Dining offers a range of cuisines and longtime favorites
Lau mentions how the community's diversity shows through the local restaurant scene. “The one thing I have to say about this neighborhood is diversity. This is New York, so we have every race, every ethnicity, every culture. The restaurants basically reflect that. Umberto's is an Italian pizza place that has been here since the 1960s. We have Iavarone Bros., and they’ve been here at least since the 1980s. Everyone loves to go there for their fresh gourmet food. Basically, you name it, we have it.” There are popular places like K. Pacho for Mexican food, drinks and live music. Afghan Grill has a bring-your-own wine policy so visitors can have their favorite vintage to pair with their halal kabobs, stew or vegan entree. Omega Diner Restaurant has been a family-owned spot since 1979 and has served breakfast, lunch and dinner ever since. Lake Success Shopping Center recently upgraded with a brand-new Target and Foot Locker. The center also features an Iavarone Bros. deli that sells gourmet ingredients, freshly baked goods and premade meals. Those who need quick grocery options visit the Stop & Shop on Hillside Avenue.Exclusive membership for Clinton G. Martin Park
Only greater New Hyde Park residents can purchase memberships to visit Clinton G. Martin Park. This center has a 50-yard outdoor pool, seven tennis courts with plenty of lighting and a playground. Members can also sign up for events like swim lessons or adult aquacise. Anyone who wants to get outside without paying a membership hangs out at Michael J. Tully Park. Canines run around the AstroTurf dog park while people practice on the running track, tennis courts or baseball fields. The Queens County Farm Museum also has free admission and allows visitors to walk around the farm to catch a glimpse of livestock grazing, bees hopping from flower to flower and browse fresh produce for sale at the farmstand.Summer concerts and farmers markets in
The Lakeside Estates Civic Association stays active in the community by organizing farmers markets and a summer concert series at Clinton G. Martin Park. Parking is free, and residents don't have to worry about having an annual pass to join in on the outdoor fun. The Jericho Turnpike from New Hyde Park Road to Lakeville Road gets taken over every September for the New Hyde Park Street Fair. Visitors have all day to enjoy food vendors, craft vendors, bounce houses and flower stands. The CAP Index gives the neighborhood a crime score of 1 out of 10, with 1 being the lowest. The national average is 4.
