Visiting Gaynor Park
Residents in St. James have historic landmarks and public parks to explore. Visitors at Gaynor Park can practice on the paved basketball or tennis courts or baseball diamonds while kids hang out on the playground equipment. Burke Veterans Memorial Park has the same amenities, but this park has even more space filled with soccer fields and a sand volleyball court. For some fun outside of town, the Smithtown Library- Smithtown Building offers group book discussions and nearby beaches make for easy day trips. “Nissequogue has high-end, exclusive beaches. You can also rent canoes at the Nissequogue River,” Longo says. Longo also recommends visiting the Sweetbriar Nature Center, where locals can see animals the center has rehabilitated. While there is no cost to enter the grounds, donations are accepted and some events require purchased tickets.Shopping and dining in St. James
“The St. James General Store is the oldest general store in the United States that’s still open to the public. They have items you won’t find in grocery stores like sasparilla drinks and wooden barrels of candy,” Longo says. The store was founded in 1857 and has been renovated to preserve the historic architecture. Smith Haven Mall off Smithtown Bypass is a popular and busy place to browse over 100 stores or grab a table at The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse or Mito Asian Fusion. Popular restaurants along Lake Avenue include Patio Pizza and Basil Cafe. The family-owned Mickey’s Ice Cream & Kitchen Space serves small-batch ice cream and customers can load up their cones with free toppings. For groceries, Adli and Trader Joe’s are off Smithtown Bypass, and there's a King Kullen nearby.Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods from $675,000
While the history and access to local amenities draw people in, residents stick around for the homes. Five-bedroom Colonial Revivals on large lots built as recently as 2024 range from $900,000 to $1.5 million. Four-bedroom Cape Cods with impressive yard space range from $675,000 to $875,000. Fairfield at St. James is a 55-and-older community with condos that sell for $445,000 to $650,000. The CAP Index score gives St. James a crime score of 2 out of 10, with 4 being the national average.Team sports at Smithtown High East
Parents in St. James have two elementary schools to choose from when enrolling their kids. St. James Elementary in the north earns an A-minus from Niche, and Mills Pond Elementary gets an A. No matter which school kids attend, they later move on to Nesaquake Middle School and then Smithtown High School East, both of which earn A-minus ratings as well. Girls at Smithtown High School East can try out for the flag football team, a recent addition to the school’s long list of teams, including the championship-winning softball and soccer teams.Annual haunted house at Deepwells Farm
Halloween is a major event at Deepwells Farm, which holds an annual haunted house and has a spot to snap some witchy photos. The farm's statue, Winnie the Witch, was erected in 1977 and recently underwent a restoration. The St. James Farmers Market is held every Saturday from June to October at the historic St. James Lutheran Church. St. James has multiple churches for Lutherans, Pentecostals and non-denominational churchgoers. St. James Episcopal Church is a historic landmark that still holds services.Commuting on the Long Island Rail Road
The St. James train station, built in 1873, takes commuters to New York City on The Long Island Rail Road. Trains come and go every two hours, so those who miss their chance to board can drive 9 miles down the Smithtown Bypass to the Port Jefferson train station or 7 miles to the larger Ronkonkoma station. The Long Island Innovation Park at Hauppauge, which is the country's second-largest commercial business center, is 7 miles away using the bypass.
