Los Ranchos de Albuquerque offers a dose of rural character
Located just beyond New Mexico’s largest city, Los Ranchos de Albuquerque provides a snapshot of the region’s agricultural roots. This community along the banks of the Rio Grande is known for its spacious lots, a result of early pioneers who divided the land to ensure access to irrigation and transportation. Farming isn’t as prevalent here as it once was, but the layout is still a draw. “A lot of the properties are on a good amount of acreage," says local Realtor Mary Engel-Bader, the leader of The Bader Real Estate Group with Keller Williams, who has 15 years of industry experience. Residents also have a range of outdoor recreation and commercial amenities at their fingertips.

Ranch and adobe styles dominate the housing landscape
Homes over 2,000 square feet are common in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque — the average square footage here is about 2,300. Buyers can find outliers under 1,500 square feet, while some of the community’s largest estates push well past 6,000 square feet. In turn, prices vary quite a bit. Options under 3,000 square feet go for $330,000 to $890,000, and the area's largest homes sell anywhere from $900,000 to $3.9 million. The ranch and adobe architectural styles are prevalent. Most lots are at least one-fifth of an acre, and some are over an acre. "A lot of that is old-owned land — people that have owned it a long time," Engel-Bader says. “Maybe they’ve lived in it for 50, 60 years. Or their older children have taken over the land."
Los Griegos does have some grand properties with their owners style reflected for all to see.

Sprawling park presents a mix of outdoor activities
This community runs up against the Rio Grande Valley State Park, whose varied landscape stretches 4,300 acres along a portion of the Rio Grande. The park includes the Paseo del Bosque Trail, a 16-mile paved path open to walkers, joggers, cyclists and equestrians. “You’ll see them ride horses everywhere,” Engel-Bader says. The space also offers river access for fishing and nonmotorized boating. Nearby Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is a noted bird-watching spot. Harnett Park has a playground and the 9,000-square-foot Alfredo Garcia Community Barn that can be reserved for events.

Farming history influences present-day dining options
A couple of area restaurants are keeping the area’s agricultural spirit alive. The Casa Rondeña Winery makes award-winning wine on its 5-acre Los Ranchos de Albuquerque property. “They grow grapes right on site,” Engel-Bader says. Casa Rondeña’s membership-only 1629 Club includes a food menu. Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm dates to 1932, and its 25-acre estate features an expansive lavender farm with flowers in bloom in June and July. Right in the community is Campo restaurant, a brunch hot spot with farm-to-table ingredients. “They grow a lot of their vegetables there,” Engel-Bader says. Fourth Street is the area’s main thoroughfare, featuring several more businesses. The list includes Mexican restaurant El Camino Dining Room, a Smith’s supermarket and Dan’s Boots & Saddles, a family-owned store selling Western wear since 1953.

The area comes alive with lavender each summer
The lavender blooms in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque are the inspiration behind a late-July tradition dating back roughly 20 years: the Lavender in the Village Festival. The festival was traditionally held within Los Ranchos de Albuquerque before moving to nearby Balloon Fiesta Park because of its growth. The event draws over 100 vendors, with all sorts of lavender-themed crafts and other products. “The lavender festival is huge,” Engel-Bader says.
The Los Poblanos Inn features 45 guest rooms and lavender fields which bloom in late May.
