Harwood offers open space by the bay
Wake up to the serene woods and farmland that make up the rural town of Harwood. The quiet air, sprawling cornfields and grazing horses bring a sense of calmness to this Anne Arundel County town while within driving distance of Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington D.C. and the Chesapeake Bay. “It’s a pretty slow and quiet lifestyle,” says Amanda Calhoun, Realtor with eXp Realty who lives near Harwood. “Most people come here because it’s rural enough that you get land and privacy and close enough to the bay to enjoy the water and to the cities to get stuff done.”

Acreage is a common denominator in Harwood
In Harwood, you’re likely to find a home with lots of outdoor space. Calhoun says, “Harwood has some smaller houses, but most are pretty big with large lots giving you plenty of privacy.” A majority of homes can be found on long side streets that stem from Maryland Route 2, the town’s main road. For around $500,000 to $600,000, you can get a small ranch-style house on an acre of land. Larger Colonial Revival and contemporary Craftsman-style houses sell for around $700,000 to $900,000, while custom mansions go for more than $1 million. With most homes offering around one to 10 acres of land, you can expect to have a wide-open yard with lots of grass and farm views, a scenic yard that backs up to a backdrop of dense woods or a mix of the two.

Surrounding communities provide relatively quick access to amenities
There isn’t much commercial activity in Harwood. The central part of town on Route 2 features an Exxon gas station, which is attached to a 7-Eleven and the United States Post Office. Locals typically drive seven miles north to Edgewater or an extra seven miles to Annapolis for everyday shopping needs. There’s plenty of fun to be had by the water in both cities, along with nearby Galesville along the West River. If you own a boat, you can keep it docked in one of the marinas to sail right out to the river and into the Chesapeake Bay. Grab a meal at one of the riverside restaurants, like Pirates Cove, where you can enjoy seafood and live music by the water.

Fishing to fitness classes, recreation attractions vary
Though not as broad as the Chesapeake Bay, Wootons Landing Park is a popular spot for its wetlands. Bring your hiking boots to walk the trails and watch the waterfowl or launch a boat to go fishing in the marshy water. You can participate in other activities at South County Recreation Center, which offers an open gym with a basketball court and fitness center. It features several programs as well, such as gymnastics, karate, sewing and summer camps.
