In the 1780s, Fern Creek was first established as an agricultural area, and Pioneer families managed fields of strawberries and fruit trees to sell in the city. Today, Fern Creek is a cozy residential neighborhood with excellent convenience to Louisville’s attractions. “Location is the primary reason people move here. It’s kind of like the center of everything, and you can get anywhere you need to be within a few minutes,” says Crystal Jacobsen, property manager at Overbrook Apartments in the neighborhood. “You can get to the South end, East end, one way to the Highlands and the other way to Bardstown.”

Suburban classics and new builds in subdivisions
Many homes in Fern Creek were built around the 1970s and feature classic suburban styles such as ranches, split levels and bilevels. Many of these older homes are renovated. Fern Creek has had some homes built since the 2000s through the 2020s. These homes incorporate brick facades, pitched roofs and attached garages, and often draw from Craftsman and new traditional styles. Both newer and older homes in Fern Creek typically go for between $250,000 and $300,000. Most homes in Fern Creek sit in subdivisions with wide, flat streets lined with trees. Newer developments tend to have sidewalks, while older developments may lack that infrastructure. Although the neighborhood mostly has single-family housing, Fern Creek does also have some apartment complexes and condos dotted throughout the neighborhood.

Kids can compete in the organization’s baseball league in the spring or play on the park’s updated, accessible playground equipment year-round. Fern Creek is also home to Wildwood Country Club, which has an 18-hole golf course and other amenities such as an outdoor pool, tennis courts, tennis center and clubhouse for events and gatherings.

Residents have a quick drive to Louisville’s major attractions
“Fern Creek has grown a whole lot. But most people doing stuff are either going to Downtown Louisville or the Highlands from here,” Jacobsen says. The Highlands is about 10 miles from Fern Creek and offers a variety of dining and entertainment for locals: “People like to drive and park in one place in the Highlands and walk everywhere from there. There’s upscale restaurants, shopping and nightlife. They’re getting ready to have their Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day Parades, which are super popular events.” Jacobsen also explains that many Fern Creek residents travel to Bardstown, about 25 miles north of Fern Creek, for more activities. “People go to Bardstown to take photos. It’s one of the most beautiful places in America. They have country music festivals too, and we have a lot of big stars that come in.” When the Kentucky Derby comes to town, Fern Creek residents are also just 12 miles southeast of Churchill Downs.

Sake Blues, The Hungry Pelican and Sugar and Spice Donut Shop
Although many residents head Downtown for upscale dining and entertainment, “we gave nice dining places in Fern Creek now too. The sushi place Sake Blue is a place a lot of people go to,” Jacobsen says. Here, diners enjoy sushi and hibachi in the restaurant’s modern dining room. Bardstown Road has most of the area’s dining options, including The Hungry Pelican. Open since 1953, The Hungry Pelican serves dishes such as New England clam chowder, fresh oysters and scallops. For dessert, locals can visit Sugar and Spice Donut Shop, a family-owned bakery offering 40 varieties of donuts. Locals can pick up groceries at Kroger on Bardstown Road or Walmart on Cedar Springs Boulevard.

Commuting and driving from Fern Creek
“Fern Creek is more of a suburban feel, but it is the middle of the line for the area. We have some people commuting to Fort Knox, some commuting Downtown, and others going to East and South Louisville,” Jacobsen says. The area’s major roadways, Gene Snyder Freeway (part of Louisville’s outer beltline, I-265) and Watterson Expressway (part of Louisville’s inner beltline, I-264) get residents nearly anywhere in the city. “Most people take Gene Snyder from Fern Creek,” Jacobsen says. Fern Creek is also less than 10 miles from the Louisville International Airport and Norton Audubon Hospital.
