Hawthorne
Home varieties on tree-lined roads
Along Hawthorne’s streets, residents will find many Cape Cod-style homes as well as ranch constructions, cottages and contemporary designs. Many of the yards are well-maintained and boast trees that bloom in the spring, meaning walks along the wide sidewalks have quite the view. Some properties have fencing around the perimeter, and there’s even some willow trees draped along the winding roads. Large driveways are common for homes in Hawthorne, as well, and garages can be found in both attached and detached forms. Residences typically sell for between $250,000 and $350,000, with a few outliers having been priced at closer to $400,000.Athletic opportunities at area schools
Local students are served by Jefferson County Public Schools. The neighborhood is home to Hawthorne Elementary School, which receives a grade of B-minus from Niche, is the district’s only Spanish Immersion Magnet institution, providing dual-language education for all grades. After fifth grade at Hawthorne, students move on to sixth through eighth grades at Highland Middle School, given a C by Niche. Atherton High School is rated at an A-minus by Niche, which also ranks it in the top 20 high schools in the entire state, and offers an athletic department including cross country in the fall, swimming in the winter and track in the spring. Cheer and dance opportunities are hosted year-round.Pickup games at nearby parks
Though no parks fall within Hawthorne’s boundaries, several open areas are near the neighborhood. The biggest is Seneca Park just to the north, located on Pee Wee Reese Road, which derives its name from the hometown hero and longtime Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop. Appropriately, Seneca offers a baseball field, where players might mimic one of Reese’s iconic defensive plays, along with tennis and volleyball courts and a soccer field. Visitors can also hit the links on its golf course or go for walks or runs. Cherokee Park, spanning nearly 400 acres, is also close by, offering numerous amenities including Big Rock Pond, picnic areas, archery and, in the winter, sledding.Worldly cuisine located around Hawthorne
Dining options in Hawthorne cover a wide range of cuisine, where customers can find Ethiopian eats at Queen of Sheba or Japanese fare on the menu at Oishii Sushi. Le Relais offers French food, and drinks can be found at Air Devil’s Inn, a beloved local bar in operation for nine decades. Route 150 lines the southwestern-facing boundary, and establishments like the Bambi Bar, chains like Circle K and Krispy Kreme and other shopping like Staples are all located along its path. A Kroger is located just up 150 to the northwest of Hawthorne. An iconic university with automotive aid
Sullivan University calls Hawthorne home for its Louisville location, one of four that the private institution operates. For residents who drive Teslas, the college’s campus also offers a Supercharger station for the cars. “University chancellor Glenn Sullivan spearheaded having one of the first charging stations in the area,” Sokoler says. “It’s right off the expressway and has eight stations.” Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Supercharger was the first to be established in the Louisville area.Roadway and airborne traffic
Bowman Field, in use for more than a century, is located to the north of Hawthorne. “On a regular basis, the landing strip takes planes over the neighborhood,” Sokoler says. “That’s something residents consider when moving here.” For those on the road, Route 155 is to the north. Known locally as Taylorsville Road, it begins at the northwestern corner of Hawthorne and runs for just over 20 miles to the southeast. Route 150 comprises the southwestern-facing boundary, linking motorists as far north as Illinois and Indiana and with other major Kentucky cities like Mount Vernon. Closer by, residents are only about 15 minutes from the city lights of downtown Louisville.
