Conveniently-located and family-friendly living just outside Louisville
Thoughts of the popular ice cream or the river of the same name in Yukon, Canada aren't far off the mark when thinking about Klondike, Kentucky. The name of this Louisville suburb dates back to the city's post-World War II suburban boom and Klondike Park, which is at its center and was first opened by Frank Bumann, a former prospector from the Yukon. Nowadays, the neighborhood is quickly growing. Since Klondike was "Built by its original homeowners around the 1950s or so, it's started to see some turnover to a younger demographic of small families and first-time homebuyers," says Barrett Goff, an area resident and broker who has sold homes throughout the Hikes Point area since 2018. Many people moving to the area do so because "The location is super convenient," says Goff, explaining that "It's just about 15 to 20 minutes from pretty much anywhere in Louisville." Klondike is just outside the inner city loop (Watterson Expressway), so access throughout the area isn't a problem and it also "Helps keep home prices affordable," says Goff. With significantly lower average sale prices than those just across the way in Downtown Louisville, Klondike residents can enjoy living a relaxed suburban lifestyle without sacrificing the diverse cultural influences that come from having a major city right next door.
Most streets in the Klondike neighborhood have sidewalks and off street parking.

Midcentury Klondike homes with quality construction
Klondike's homes were mostly built in the late 1950s and feature not only original brick or stone construction but also lower sales prices than homes right across Watterson Expressway heading towards downtown. The average sales price for the neighborhood is about $230,000 dollars, which is around $40,000 dollars less expensive than the overall average in Louisville. Despite this affordable price, homes tend to come on generous quarter to half-acre lots and are surrounded by well-maintained lawns and mature ornamental trees. In terms of style, homes in Klondike range between ranch-styles with basements, split levels, bungalows and a selection of traditional homes. In price, smaller two-bedroom homes can sell for as low as $200,000, while larger homes with three bedrooms and up to 2,000 square feet of space can sell for up to $320,000.

Getting around the Greater Louisville area
Getting anywhere in Louisville is just a matter of "Hopping on the inner city loop, which is easy since Klondike is so close to the expressway," says Goff. Residents are just over ten miles from Downtown Louisville along Interstate 64 as well, so they can head into the heart of the city to experience the sights and sounds any time they want. In the case of a medical emergency, the closest hospital, Norton Hospital, is also located right downtown. Those traveling out of state, however, can head a mere seven miles southwest along the Watterson Expressway to find Louisville International Airport.

McMahan Plaza is just up Breckenridge Drive with the neighborhood Kroger, while residents can find conveniences like Lowes, Target and Costco just off Bardstown Road. Great European shops can also be found in the area, like Chocolate & Nut Kingdom. When patrons walk into the shop, they are treated to a wall of chocolate-covered nuts. One signature of this shop is its fresh baklava and Turkish delights, which are made with coconut, pomegranate, milk and roasted pistachio. Sitting within the same shopping center, Borsalino Café and Deli is a Balkan coffeehouse locals often enjoy spending time at. The Bosnian Pita can be filled with a choice of fresh beef, potato or spinach and cheese, while, for more traditional dishes, there is the chicken or beef gyro paired with a cup of caffè macchiato. The neighborhood also has a few great Latin eateries. Taco City has "Some of the best tacos in Louisville," says Goff. The shop is known for its diverse menu of mix-and-match tacos and colorful, fruity drinks to go along with them. Mi Sueño Restaurant, on the other hand, serves authentic Cuban fare. Patrons can try their ropa vieja, made with flank steak, or their pork fricassee, which is pork in a tomato-based Cuban sauce.
