There’s no guarantee residents will find humorous rhymes every day in Limerick, but the close-knit neighborhood close to downtown Louisville has historic roots and an architectural landscape lodged in the early 20th century. The historically preserved area derives its name from the Ireland county from which many early residents hailed, and plenty of older homes populate the neighborhood to give it a truly authentic atmosphere.

Schools aplenty close to Limerick
Within Jefferson County Public Schools, students can start their learning at Engelhard Elementary School, which features a small enrollment with a student-to-teacher ratio of just nine to one. Engelhard receives a C-minus from Niche, while Highland Middle follows within the school district and serves grades six through eight while receiving a C grade. High schools in the area include Atherton High School, rated at an A-minus while being ranked the 16th-best high school in the state by Niche, and Eastern High School, which also receives an A-minus. Clubs at Eastern High include gaming, graphics, ping pong and more. A historically Black university and staple of the area, Simmons College of Kentucky was founded in 1879.

Ben Washer Park is the only established open space located within the boundaries of Limerick. The two-acre park offers its visitors a playground alongside picnic tables and a picnic shelter, perfect for being active or just relaxing and taking in a nice day, while the Limerick Community Garden encourages residents to grow plants in its soil. To the east, Memorial Park is less than an acre, with a picnic area, while Central Park features an amphitheater, sports courts and a “sprayground” on its nearly 17 acres of space. At the KFC Yum! Center, basketball fans can catch University of Louisville men’s basketball and women’s basketball or volleyball games in the arena, as well as occasional concerts; past stars who took to the center’s stage include Beyonce, Metallica and Elton John.

A baseball fan’s paradise
Baseball fans have no shortage of attractions to frequent just outside of Limerick. To the northeast is Louisville Slugger Field, the home of the Louisville Bats. Serving as Minor League Baseball’s triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, the Bats have played there for more than four decades, and notable alums of the team include Edwin Encarnacion, Joey Votto and a brief stint by MLB and NFL star Deion Sanders late in his career. To the northwest, the iconic baseball equipment manufacturer’s name can be found again, this time on the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and the world’s largest baseball bat, standing outside the museum at 120 feet tall. On tours, fans can walk through the brand’s history in the sport and rotating exhibits, see a signature wall showcasing some of the best to ever swing a Louisville Slugger and take part in interactive features, including the “bat vault” and actual batting cages.

Kentucky Route 1020 also passes close to Limerick ahead of its conclusions in the city of Louisville. Starting close to Shepherdsville almost 20 miles south, it winds its way northward and splits just before it runs by Limerick. Northbound lanes continue on Second Street into Louisville, while southbound motorists descend Third Street before the two lanes join and continue south. The two roads split Freedom Park and merge just past the University of Louisville itself. Kentucky’s section of Interstate 65 is also just to the east, running the entire length of the state and as far as Illinois to the north and Alabama to the south.
