Once known as uptown Louisville, Phoenix Hill was first established by German immigrants in 1861. Today, Phoenix Hill is home to several hospitals, breweries and historic homes. The neighborhood is conveniently located right across Interstate 64 from Downtown Louisville, so residents, business owners and visitors alike have easy access to the city's most trendy areas, best parks and most flavorful restaurants. With so much within walking distance, and the Transit Authority of River City's bus routes going through the neighborhood, Phoenix Hill residents don't need a car to catch an event at the KFC Yum! Center, commute to work or enjoy some company and drinks at local spots like Mile Wide Beer. Plus, Phoenix Hill is also a welcoming place to live, says Neighborhood Association President Kristi Ashby. "Even though we're right in the city, it's the kind of place where everyone knows their neighbors.” With relatively affordable price points and diverse architecture throughout, Phoenix Hill beckons to first-time homebuyers, professionals and anyone else looking to get a front-row seat to Louisville's vibrant city culture.

Relatively affordable homes with historic charm
In addition to Phoenix Hill's busier medical and business districts, the neighborhood is also home to several blocks of apartments, townhouses and single-family homes. Walking along Phoenix Hill's residential streets, locals will find a wealth of vintage architecture, ranging from gothic churches to ornate, classical revival facades and quaint wood shingling. Homes are often shaded by leafy oak trees and offer small, enclosed front yards and rear alley parking. Pastel hues and a diverse range of architectural styles keep the neighborhood feeling lively, with shotgun, bungalow and Greek or Federal revival homes being the most common. Homes in Phoenix Hill are also touted for their affordability, with an average sales price of about $230,000 dollars. Many of the neighborhood's homes are shotgun style, with long lots extending back and a narrow front facing the street. For shotgun homes built as early as 1900, homebuyers can expect to pay from $160,000 to $250,000 dollars, while larger, more refurbished homes and those with historically significant construction can sell from $300,000 to $500,000 dollars.

Walk to local dining in Phoenix Hill
Just minutes from some of the best shopping and dining in the city, Phoenix Hill is also home to its own local scene. Dominique Davis, who has lived in the Louisville area her whole life, says she was attracted to the Phoenix Hill area because of its eclectic culture. “It’s pretty much a hub for anything you can think of,” she says. Just across the railroad and Beargrass Creek from the neighborhood's western portions, residents can find several breweries offering their own unique takes on Kentucky brews. Mile Wide Beer is known for its artisanal drafts and retro game machines, while Gravely Brewing has a more laid-back vibe and peaceful areas for outdoor seating. For somewhere else to eat, Agave and Rye is a great Mexican spot to enjoy festive drinks, mix-and-match tacos and a fun atmosphere backgrounded by colorful murals and arcade games. Another highlight of Phoenix Hill is its proximity to the Phoenix Hill NuLu Farmers Market, which takes place just a few blocks north of the neighborhood from mid-May to late October every year. The market features plenty of locally sourced goods and fresh produce to buy, though, in the off-season, Webb’s Market is another nearby option. A local favorite, residents can pick up quick conveniences here like snacks, shelf items and even warm meals made daily. For more grocery options, “You’ll have to drive. There are a few Kroger stores within 5 miles,” says Ashby.

Diverse school choices in Jefferson County
As part of Jefferson County, parents in Phoenix Hill have several school choices to choose from for their kids' educations. To assist in this process, Jefferson County Public Schools put together a school finder tool that allows parents to choose schools and apply for magnet schools if they desire. Elementary-age students can attend Breckinridge/Franklin Elementary, which is just over a mile away and receives a C-minus rating from Niche. Greathouse/Shryock Elementary is a second option for neighborhood families, offering a magnet program and an overall A-minus rating. Sixth graders can move on to Dr. J. Blaine Hudson Middle School, which is the newest school in the district (and yet to be ranked by Niche). Students here have the opportunity to participate in various electives, including coding, food science and social justice. For high school, there are also many choices that offer great programs. Central High Magnet, with a B-minus score from Niche, offers pre-med and business management courses while, at A-rated J. Graham Brown, “Students are nurtured to learn independently. They teach them how to find the resources they need," says Davis.

Heading outdoors around eastern Louisville
Fortunately for Phoenix Hill residents, getting outside and finding some green space isn't too difficult in this part of town. Vanessa Coleman, a lifetime Louisville resident and local librarian, enjoys exploring areas like the Cave Hill Cemetery and Arboretum, located just a mile east of the neighborhood. A popular spot for photography and relaxing strolls when the weather is nice, Coleman says Cave Hill is “Filled with beautiful trees and people often feed ducks there." Coleman also mentioned Hauck’s Corner, which is just over 1 mile away. As a family-owned business that stood in the community for over 100 years, Hauck’s Corner has had a prolific impact on the area, especially when it comes to preserving the area's unique German culture. Each year, the store hosts the World Championship Dainty Contest, which is a pastime invented by some of the neighborhood's first inhabitants. Residents who enjoy billiards can also compete in tournaments or build their skills at the Railyard Billiards & Sports Club, which is a sister company to Mile Wide Brewing. For more outdoor options, Cherokee Park has miles of wooded trails and outdoor sports facilities, while Waterfront Park offers scenic views of the Ohio River, a playground and, when the weather allows, there are also concerts on Wednesday nights.

Getting around the Phoenix Hill area
One of Phoenix Hill's best selling points is its ease of transportation. “Many people in the area don’t even have cars. You can walk to most places, and TARC (bus) stops are all over,” says Davis. Those who need to travel further can take a Greyhound bus from Union Station (formerly a train station), or catch a ride to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, which is about 6 miles south. In the case of medical emergencies, Norton Hospital is located right on Chestnut Street, towards the western end of Phoenix Hill.
