A stable neighborhood in the shadow of Churchill Downs
The community of Wilder Park is so close to Churchill Downs that residents can hear the bugle's 'Call to The Post' and the aroma of the stables sometimes wafts through the streets. A mixed-use neighborhood located in the heart of Louisville, “residents here enjoy proximity to the University of Louisville, Churchill Downs and downtown, making Wilder Park a very convenient place to live,” says Deborah Cox, Realtor with RE/MAX 100. With these amenities close by – some even within walking distance – Wilder Park has quickly become a desirable community for those who value proximity to major employers like the university and the Louisville Airport.

And the Louisville Airport is right next door, only 2 miles from the center of Wilder Park, making it easy for travelers to grab a flight and serving as a major employer within the neighborhood, but it also comes with the noise of regular inbound and outbound jets flying overhead. Bringing older homes into the modern age
Residents will find a mix of rental and investment units alongside single-family homes in Wilder Park. “Wilder Park has beautiful older homes,” says Cox. “And many are being renovated.” Ranging from small Cape Cods to bungalows and a sprinkling of shotgun-styles, many homes here date back to the early mid-20th century and as such, often come with a mix of renovations and updates. Price points are reflective of this and can range from $125,000 to $500,000 –depending on the condition of the property. Bargains can be found in the low $100,000s when a home requires some additional elbow grease, while those already complete with contemporary updates like chefs’ kitchens, granite countertops and efficient HVAC systems will go for the mid to low $500,000s. Maple and oak trees shade the streets, many with mixed on- and off-street parking.

The most famous fish fry in Louisville
Sometimes food isn’t just food, it’s an event. “The best fish in the city is at Suburban Lodge,” says Cox. The Suburban Social Club Fish Fry, run and staffed by the Brothers of Suburban Lodge 740, has been a Louisville tradition since 1919. Every Saturday from March to November, locals line up for their Green River-style cod, by the pound, on a sandwich or by itself. Folks know to grab some marinated onions and tartar sauce to accompany the meal.
The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports
With Wilder Park being adjacent to its famous neighbor, Churchill Downs, residents will have to get used to the annual hubbub – some residents can see the track from their front porch . Every first weekend of May, the Kentucky Derby brings noise and traffic to town and residents have learned to plan their schedules around it. During the lead-up to the event, residents know to expect detours, traffic snarls and a massive influx of race fans that can disrupt daily life. Still, it’s a small price to pay for being in shouting distance of perhaps the most-watched two-minute sporting event in the country.
