Lower Mount Bethel Township, a rural community with access to cities
Lower Mount Bethel Township is near Pennsylvania's border with New Jersey and offers a charming rural setting with older homes on large lots. Farmland and single-family homes in classic styles characterize the area. Most of the township is served by the Bangor Area School District, and commuters have access to major interstates leading to the Lehigh Valley, the Poconos and New Jersey. Residents are also close to parks and natural attractions, as well as a variety of dining options in Bethlehem and surrounding communities.
Open space and older homes in classic styles
Daniele Davanzo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Hearthside, has worked in the industry for five years and says the area is known for its rural character. “Absolutely beautiful open farmland, lots of open space, still very easy access to the interstates,” she says. Homes here have a median build year of 1978 and are mainly Cape Cod, Colonial Revival, bungalow and ranch-styles. Prices range from the upper $100,000s to the upper $600,000s. The median sale price is $346,450, slightly lower than in Upper Mount Bethel and the city of Bethlehem.
Students are close to two school districts
The Bangor Area School District serves most of Lower Mount Bethel, while the highly rated Easton Area School District serves the Martins Creek and Lower Mud Run Road area. Bangor has three elementary schools, including the highly rated DeFranco Elementary School. Students in this district may attend the highly rated Bangor Area Middle and Bangor Area High School. Easton has seven elementary schools, including the highly rated Shawnee Elementary School. Students continue to Easton Area Middle and High School.
Regional employers are within reach via I‑78 and I‑80
Lower Mount Bethel is mainly rural, so residents here may commute to work in New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley area or the Poconos. The township borders New Jersey and is less than 10 miles from Phillipsburg. Most employers in the area are in Lehigh Valley, about 30 miles away, using Interstate 78, which serves Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Mount Pocono is a hotbed of tourism and hospitality work, just over 30 miles away via Interstate 80.
Easy access to parks, trails and riverfront fun
The area has its own parks and is surrounded by outdoor recreation, including:
- The Bryan Kiefer Memorial Park for soccer and baseball
- Centerfield School for outdoor and indoor sports and play areas
- The Jerry Brunetti Environmental Welcome Center for nature trails
- The Meadows at Martins Creek for fishing and hiking
- Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, about 15 miles away, for hiking on the Appalachian Trail and sightseeing
Breweries and Bethlehem restaurants offer dining variety
“There are some nice local breweries, like Richmond Farm and Allegheny Brewery,” says Davazo. Most restaurants are in Bethlehem area and include:
- The Allegheny Creek Brewing Company for house-made brews and Sunday brunch
- The Richmond Farm & Brewery for pub food and a tap room
- The Bayou in Bethlehem for Southern comfort food
- The Edge in Bethlehem for upscale dining
