A quiet home-base near Lake Norman northwest of Charlotte

About 20 miles northwest of Charlotte, Lowesville sits by the southern end of Lake Norman, the biggest man-made lake in North Carolina. “Lowesville is not a city and it’s not a town; it’s just an area between Charlotte and Denver on Highway 16,” says Frank Free, a Realtor at Lake Realty who specializes in communities surrounding Lake Norman. “It’s basically a rural area with some businesses, about 15 to 30 minutes from shopping centers and restaurants.” In addition to its location removed from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte, Lowesville’s newly built homes within the highly rated Lincoln County School district attract homebuyers. The community is also a few miles from the McGuire Nuclear Station, a major employer in the region. Families can learn about nuclear power and the environment at EnergyExplorium at McGuire Nuclear Station, a science museum that features a walking trail alongside Lake Norman.

Lowesville contains some recently built homes

In Lowesville, quiet streets—many of which are cul-de-sacs clustered alongside open fields and patches of woods—are lined with spacious, grassy lawns. Buyers can find ranch-styles, New Traditionals and some newly built modern transitional homes. Single-family home prices range from about $300,000 to $780,000. The newer subdivisions branching off Sifford Road east of Highway 16 typically fetch top prices.

Waterfront recreation at Lake Norman

Lake Norman is the backdrop for much of the area’s outdoor recreation. Here, folks can spend the day sailing, fishing or lounging at one of the waterfront parks. Boats can dock at the private Safe Harbor Westport, which offers dry storage, or the public Blythe Landing Park, which is especially popular in warm weather for kayaking and playing on the sand volleyball courts. “Lowesville doesn’t border Lake Norman, but 20 minutes away, there’s a large county park with swimming access,” Free says, referring to the 46-acre Ramsey Creek Park. Located further up the east side of the lake, Ramsey Creek Park has a sandy beach with lifeguards where families can swim in the summer. A bit closer to Marshville, Cowan’s Ford Country Club also sits right on the lake. Members can access the private boat launch, 18-hole championship golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, and outdoor pool.

About 10 miles east, Birkdale Village is an outdoor, pedestrian-friendly shopping center with clothing retailers like Anthropologie and Lilly Pulitzer and restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory.

Emergency care at CaroMont Regional Medical Center is about 10 miles south and air travel at Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 16 miles south.
