Loyalhanna Township is a small community characterized by its golden fields of corn and winding country roads. Located 40 miles from Pittsburgh, this rural neighborhood offers a quiet getaway. “The people that are going to live in that area want more of a country atmosphere. They don’t want to be next to their neighbors. They want quiet,” says Lisa Petzel, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. She’s been selling homes in the area for seven years. The neighborhood also offers several outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing and boating along the Loyalhanna Creek, which runs through the center of town. Shopping options are sparse, but residents have access to fresh foods from local farms. Houses here are hard to come by. “A total of four properties sold in the last six months, so that’s definitely not suburban. It’s small-town USA,” Petzel says. When houses do go up for sale, they average about 36 days on the market. Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes are popular here and are often spread out. Newer homes with at least three bedrooms on large plots can sell for nearly $500,000, while older, smaller homes on modest lots can start around $100,000. Kids may attend schools in the Greensburg Salem School District, including James H. Metzgar Elementary School, Greensburg Salem Middle School and Greensburg Salem High School, all graded a B-minus on Niche. At Greensburg Salem High, students can take career and trade-focused classes through the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. The Kiski School provides a private college-preparatory boarding school option in this neighborhood. The Bush Recreation Area is situated next to Loyalhanna Creek and the Loyalhanna Dam. It offers residents access to boat launches, lawn space, campgrounds, a playground and a fishing pier. Mannitto Golf Club is less than 2 miles south. It boasts an 18-hole public course and a full-service restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Loyalhanna Township is mainly residential, but a few shops are scattered throughout town. Residents can find daily needs and select prepared foods at Aggie’s Country Market on Pennsylvania State Route 286 or order specialty cut meats at Weimer Meats on Weimer Road. Acres of Oz farm also provides residents with free-range chicken eggs. Brand Spankin Used Yard Sale flea market is just over 7 miles away and sells various gently used goods. For other shopping and dining needs, residents often travel across the Conemaugh River to Saltsburg. There, people can find a Shop ‘n Save grocery store and a NAPA Auto Parts. Several restaurants also dot the streets, including the locally owned John’s Pizzeria, the family-operated GG’s Gourmet Café and the local gathering hole, the Point Street Tavern. While rural, Loyalhanna Township is near several major roads. Pennsylvania State Route 981 runs through town and leads to Pittsburgh, just 40 miles away. U.S. Route 119 is also close and runs southwest. Pittsburgh International Airport is not exceptionally close, at around 60 miles away. There is no public transit here, but public bus stops run along Pennsylvania State Route 66, some 14 miles away.
