North Lubbock neighborhood forging a new path forward
A predominately Hispanic north Lubbock neighborhood, Jackson-Mahon has roots in the city preceding its recent economic growth spurt. Facing challenges brought on by neglected infrastructure and a higher than average crime rate, the population has declined by 28 percent since 2010. However, through the efforts of a dedicated comprehensive neighborhood action plan and engaged citizens, the future is looking brighter. Wilson Bowling heads up the neighborhood planning department for the City of Lubbock and identified Jackson-Mahon as one of four communities selected to identify and implement comprehensive action steps with the input of residents and other stakeholders. Clovis Road is the neighborhood dividing line between Jackson and Mahon, and there are many reasons to be positive. With the new Carmona-Harrison Elementary School opening in 2021 and multiple parks, the opportunity is there to forge a new path forward.
Quick access south to downtown Lubbock
Jackson-Mahon is two miles north of downtown Lubbock, with Clovis Road providing the quickest access. Public transit options are currently unavailable in the neighborhood, but Citibus has bus routes for people closer to downtown. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport is six miles north, and the nearest emergency room is three miles south of University Medical Center.
Older ranch-style builds and opportunity
Homes in Jackson-Mahon are primarily single-story ranch-style builds, some built in the mid-20th century and a few newer builds post-2000. In the southern half of the neighborhood in Jackson, Wilson explains that one of the challenges is that it is an older area. Stretching south to the Marsha Sharpe Freeway (US-82), some residents have felt threatened by gentrification and commercial activity, while many dedicated homeowners are loyal to the neighborhood. In Mahon, on the north side, there is a mix of new and older homes with several platted buildable lots and opportunities for growth under the right conditions. Less than half of homes are owner-occupied, and several properties are used as rentals and investment properties. Homes in Jackson-Mahon are typically priced between $75,000 and $150,000
Quick stop restaurants and Mexican flavor
Residents in Jackson-Mahon have access to several shops and restaurants, with the neighborhood bordering two commercial corridors. In the neighborhood's southwest corner, residents can find familiar favorites like Panda Express, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and Chick-Fil-A. “Jackson has a decent amount of retail and amenities. University Avenue runs right through it and is near the university. A lot of students live nearby, and there are several fast-food restaurants nearby,” Bowling says. Pollo Rico has a modest exterior but serves up smoked chicken, tacos and more. For everyday items and Hispanic food items, La Super Economica Meat Market has everything from corn tortillas to fresh cuts of meat for the table. Tommy’s Famous Burgers has an eclectic collection of custom burgers, sandwiches and tacos. The family-owned restaurant has a classic diner-style interior and has operated since 1978.
Canyon Lakes system developed out of the rubble
Jackson-Mahon borders one of the most beautiful parts of Lubbock with the Canyon Lakes system just outside neighborhood boundaries. In 1970, after a tornado ripped through Lubbock, destroying much of downtown and the north side, the city dug out an old canyon system, part of which became Canyon Rim Park, a popular spot for fishing and hiking. “They used that as a way for us to have basically drainage and a water system. They dug out the canyon and created a lake system with six lakes, and we actually have a plan for a seventh lake.” Hollins Park has two lighted tennis courts complemented by a playground and a walking path.

Students in Jackson-Mahon attend Lubbock Independent School District, beginning at Carmona-Harrison Elementary School and moving on to Cavazos Middle School and Lubbock High School, rated C-plus and A-minus, respectively. The school is named after Anita Carmona-Harrison, a former teacher who championed bilingual education, writing the first bilingual curriculum guide for kindergarten students in 1969. The neighborhood is two miles east of Texas Tech University.
