East Lubbock neighborhood with growth potential
Parkway-Cherry Point was traditionally known as a working-class neighborhood in northeast Lubbock with modest homes. As the city grew, new challenges presented a new trajectory. "This neighborhood is one of the few within the Loop that is actually growing at a moderate pace," says Wilson Bowling, Neighborhood Planner for the City of Lubbock. With a lot of open land and opportunities, developers began to notice. The neighborhood has a selection of affordable homes with more in the works. The area is backed by two major thoroughfares and Mackenzie Park, the city's flagship park. Just outside the neighborhood in east Lubbock Leprino Foods is constructing a $1 billion cheese plant, which will be a game changer for the economy of Parkway-Cherry Point and for Lubbock as a whole, adding jobs and new tax revenue. "It's ripe for opportunity if opportunity would take a look and give it a shot," Bowling says.

Endless green space and prairie dog companions
On the neighborhood's west side, Mackenzie Park is one of the city's most extensive parks. Formerly a state park, it sits on more than 200 acres where visitors can enjoy the day on horseback with equestrian trails, a disc golf course and a dog park. Also on Mackenzie Park grounds, the 36-hole Meadowbrook Canyon Creek Golf Club will soon be taken over by the city, where plans are in place for a revamp. "Truly one of the best places in Lubbock is right on the periphery of this neighborhood," Bowling says. At Prairie Dog Town, visitors can get close to some of Lubbock's animal neighbors. Created in 1935, the burrows served as a sanctuary for the black-tailed prairie dog under threat from a government extermination program.
