Environmental Concerns
Lubbock is in Tornado Alley and was hit by an F5 in 1970. No public storm shelters have been established, but the city encourages residents to register their basements and private shelters on the city website. Like the rest of Texas, Lubbock has hot and arid summers, with average summer highs reaching 94 degrees Fahrenheit. Lubbock’s drinking water is disinfected with chloramine, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia that can taste bitter or metallic. Stormwater pollution is also an issue, though detention basins in several city parks help mitigate and reduce sewer overflows, causing less pollution.
Athletic events at local colleges and the Lubbock Arts Festival
“There are plenty of entertainment options. Also, Lubbock is a huge college town with Texas Tech, Lubbock Christian, Wayland Baptist and South Plains College,” says Sellers. Athletic events at local colleges often draw crowds, and Jones AT&T Stadium at Texas Tech University is often packed during football season. The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 6 miles away, hosts the Lubbock Arts Festival in April. The festival has live entertainment, vendors, a children’s art area and other demonstrations and displays. Closer to home, the Jack & Mary Neil Strong Park is a square of manicured greenery with a playground and a basketball court for pick-up games.
