Everything is bigger in Texas, and that’s especially true when it comes to Lucas. Located 30 miles northeast of Dallas, Lucas is a rural suburb of around 9,000 people with lots of land and Texas country appeal. With luxurious million-dollar homes, lakeside amenities and educational options between six different school districts, it isn’t hard to see why families in the area give Lucas an A grade on Niche. “The majority of people that live out here have kids,” Owens Realtors owner Paige Owens says. “That’s one of the things that makes Lucas unique.”
Big houses with even bigger lawns
Homes are large in Lucas, most more than 3,000 square feet in size. But the land they’re built on is even bigger than the houses themselves. “Just about everything in Lucas is on acreage, with most of it being between one and three acres,” Owens says. “You have some with the farmhouse look, but then you have some modern architecture in the newer stuff being built.” One-story traditional homes with one-acre lots will be more affordable between $500,000 and $1 million, while homes in the $1-2 million range will have heated in-ground pools and spas, cathedral ceilings and putting greens. As sale prices inch towards $2-5 million, larger contemporary homes will either be on the lakefront or have three-to-five-car garages with upwards of 4-acre lots, with some being as large as 20 acres.
Six school districts plus a private school
Lucas has several educational pathways between Allen, McKinney, Plano, Princeton and Wylie ISD. While all of these are top-rated school systems, most families in the community will choose to send their children to Lovejoy ISD, which earned an A-plus on Niche and an exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency. “Almost all of Lucas feeds into Lovejoy ISD,” Owens says. “That’s one of the driving factors of why people move here.” Joe V. Hart Elementary has served the community for 25 years and was rated an A on Niche. Willow Springs Middle has a gifted and talented program and earned an A-plus. Lovejoy High School has a 99% graduation rate and also earned an A-plus. Lucas Christian Academy was rated a B-plus.
Lucas parks and community centers
The suburb has two parks that both have walking trails with a pavilion. Lucas Community Park has a playground, while Kenneth R. Park has softball and soccer fields. Boating and fishing are popular activities at Lavon Lake 2 miles east, and local events take place at the Lucas Community Center. “They hold a farmer’s market once a month at the community center,” Owens says. “A lot of people come out for that.”
Drive and dine in Allen
There isn’t much shopping and dining to be had inside the suburb itself. In lieu of local options, many will instead choose to drive 6 miles east to Allen, with regional cuisines ranging from Greek and Italian to Tex-Mex and southern comfort. It also has multiple grocery store options, such as Walmart, Target and H-E-B.
Country roads around Collin County
While this suburb offers lush countryside views, it isn’t easy to navigate Lucas’ vast acreage. Most residents are car-dependent and use the farm-to-market roads to drive to neighboring cities Allen and McKinney. The closest 24-hour urgent care is at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital 8 miles east in Allen, while the Dallas Love Field airport is 30 miles south.
Environmental factors
In 2015, air pollution levels in Collin County were high enough that the Environmental Protection Agency designated it a non-attainment area, a designation it still carries. To improve air quality, Lucas city council enacted a burning ordinance in 2020. Fireworks are prohibited to reduce the risk of wildfires. Minor flooding can occur to the northeast around White Rock Creek.
