Diamond Hill
One of Lynchburg's seven hills
Diamond Hill is a historic neighborhood within walking distance of downtown Lynchburg. In 1870, it was officially recognized as a part of Lynchburg and went through a golden age in the 1890s that established it as a desirable neighborhood. In 1974, the Diamond Hill Historical Society was created to preserve Diamond Hill’s character, which helped it become Lynchburg’s first historical district. “Lynchburg is known as the city of seven hills and Diamond Hill is one of them. All seven hills are historic areas,” says Robert Dawson, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Dawson Ford Garbee and Co., who has been selling homes in Lynchburg for over four decades. The area upholds its history with the Diamond Hill Historic District and places such as the Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum. The area has grown into a residential community with many weekly and annual events throughout the year. “Diamond Hill is a very popular area since it’s just blocks from downtown, where the YMCA, restaurants and shopping is,” Dawson says. “It’s also right near the City Market, where the farmers market is on Saturdays. They also have live music on the weekends.”
The Lynchburg Community Market is minutes away from Diamond Hill.
Lynchburg Community Market, Kemper Street Flea Market
The Lynchburg Community Market is open Tuesday through Saturday, with a special weekly Saturday market, where neighbors can enjoy live music as they peruse fresh produce. On the other side of the area, the Kemper Street Flea Market offers antique items, an occasional DJ, pool tables, and a small restaurant inside. The nearby Riverfront Park hosts events like an eight-week concert series, weekly movie nights and a July Fourth fireworks show. The Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum is an interesting place to visit any time of the year. Here, people learn more about Anne Spencer, a well-known Harlem Renaissance poet and Civil Rights leader whose home was a gathering place for fellow advocates such as W.E.B. Dubois and Langston Hughes.
